Gainesville can be explored through a range of interests: trails through forests and wetlands, as well as cultural sites with specific historical themes. The Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail is 17 miles long and begins at Boulware Springs Nature Park. Morningside Nature Center and Sweetwater Wetlands Park offer different highlights, focusing on varied landscapes, birdlife, and shorter trails.

Trails and Habitats

The Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail is used for hiking, running, cycling, and horseback riding. At 17 miles, it is the longest of the trails described here. Its starting point at Boulware Springs Nature Park and its variety of uses make it a different option from trails that pass through individual natural areas.

Morningside Nature Center has more than six miles of hiking trails. They pass through sandhill landscapes, pine flatwoods, and cypress domes. The Nature Center preserves one of the last remaining examples of fire-dependent longleaf pine forests in the area. The trail length and the named landscapes give a visit a different focus from the loops and wetland trails at Sweetwater.

Sweetwater Wetlands Park has more than 3.5 miles of gravel trails and boardwalks. Observation platforms offer views of the habitats, while information panels and guided tours add to the experience. More than 260 bird species live in the park. The combination of trails, boardwalks, and platforms therefore highlights different aspects of nature observation than the trails through the sandhill and forest landscapes at Morningside Nature Center.

The trail lengths can be compared directly: Morningside Nature Center has more than six miles of hiking trails, while Sweetwater Wetlands Park has more than 3.5 miles of gravel trails and boardwalks. Both figures describe the length of the trails, while the landscapes differ. At 17 miles, the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail is longer and is also used for cycling and horseback riding.

Tours and Special Events

The Living History Farm at Morningside Nature Center depicts the everyday life of a Florida family from the mid-to-late 19th century. It also offers a program with costumed interpreters who bring everyday history to life. The program takes place monthly, from the first Saturday in September through May, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dates and times may change.

Sweetwater Wetlands Park also offers public tours: they take place monthly at 9 a.m., from the last Saturday in September through May. Compared with the program at the Living History Farm, they start half an hour earlier; the subject matter also differs, with a focus on the park’s habitats. Dates and times may change.

Depot Park includes a stormwater park and a nature preserve with wildlife, wetlands, and plantings in higher areas. The park adds further nature-related themes to the trail offerings. Every year on New Year’s Eve, it also hosts Sparks in the Park, featuring food trucks and fireworks. The event pairs a visit to the park with a specific date on the annual calendar; event details may change.

Cultural History in Museums and Exhibitions

The Historic Thomas Center began as Sunkist Villa and was completed in 1910. Today, it houses art galleries, historic rooms, and historical exhibits. Visitors can take docent-led tours or self-guided tours by mobile phone. The two formats offer different ways to explore the rooms and exhibits; tour arrangements and opening hours may change.

The A. Quinn Jones Museum & Cultural Center features a permanent exhibition about Professor Jones and houses oral history collections on the African American experience in Gainesville. Visits are possible by appointment and during special events; access arrangements may change. Visitors interested in cultural history will find not only an exhibition about a specific person here, but also oral accounts relating to the African American experience in Gainesville.
