The National Mall stretches from the foot of the United States Capitol to the Potomac River. In Washington, D.C., National Mall and Memorial Parks protects more than 1,000 acres of green space. The area is open around the clock; check for notices about temporary closures or special restrictions before your visit.

Memorials: History in Many Forms

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is located in West Potomac Park. The Lincoln Memorial takes a different approach: the statue of Abraham Lincoln, created by Daniel Chester French, is its central feature and is made of 28 pieces of Georgia marble. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the struggle for freedom, equality and justice.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial stands on the Tidal Basin among Japanese cherry trees; peak bloom is seasonal. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial lists the names of 58,318 Americans in chronological order who lost their lives while serving their country during the Vietnam War. The 56 pillars of the World War II Memorial represent the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories at the time of World War II. The Korean War Veterans Memorial honors 21 other countries that fought alongside the United States in the Korean War. The Washington Monument honors and commemorates George Washington in the center of the nation's capital.

The memorials use different approaches: a central statue, a chronological list of names or pillars with symbolic meaning. Along with the names and numbers, you will encounter specific design details that reveal the different ways of remembering.

Museums and Special Insights

The Smithsonian is the world's largest museum complex and includes 21 museums and the National Zoo. The number of museums and visitor offerings may change as additional facilities open. Eleven Smithsonian museums are located along the National Mall; their locations may change during renovations or when new museums open.

At the National Zoo's daily animal demonstrations, you can watch animal experts work with the zoo's animals. Check the current schedule before your visit. The Library of Congress offers a different kind of insight: free timed-entry tickets are required to enter its Thomas Jefferson Building. Visitors can take part in short, five-minute tours around the center of the Main Reading Room. The Live! at the Library series regularly offers special talks, music, performances, films and workshops on Thursday evenings. Check current dates and entry times in advance.

Green Spaces and Discoveries

Rock Creek Park manages nearly 3,000 acres of land in northwest Washington, D.C., and parts of the northeast. Within its main boundaries, the park has more than 30 miles of hiking trails. Its acreage and trail network describe two different aspects of the park: its size and the length of its designated hiking trails.

At Peirce Mill, visitors can explore the interior, watch demonstrations, and meet park staff and volunteers. You can also plan a visit to Meridian Hill Park around specific visiting hours: From May through October, it is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight; from November through April, it is open daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Since opening hours may change, check the information before your visit.
