The Fall River gives Fall River Mills a distinctive natural setting: it is one of California’s major spring-fed rivers, is fed by a series of large springs, and joins the Pit River near town. The area also features a designated historic landmark, a museum with regional collections, and opportunities to explore the surroundings on foot or by water.

River Scenery and Trails

The Fall River meanders for about 15 miles through Fall River Valley. The river is also known for its “Blue-Ribbon” wild trout fishery. About 100 cfs are diverted through Fall River Mills to benefit fish, habitats, and recreation along the lower stretch of the river. At Fall River Lake, the Fall River Mills AG Unit covers about 463 acres of woodland and grassland.

For a trail with defined endpoints, the Fall River Lake Day Use Walk offers a useful guide: it runs from the day-use area to the end of the gravel road. The one-way distance is 0.7 miles, or 1.4 miles round trip. When planning your time, allow for the return journey; trail conditions can change, so it’s worth checking before setting out.

Traces of Local History

Lockhart Ferry is a designated historic landmark in Fall River Mills. Samuel Lockhart established it in 1856 as part of the first wagon road between Yreka and Red Bluff. Its history connects the town with an early transportation route.

The Fort Crook Museum

Exhibits in the Fort Crook Museum’s main building showcase items from the region; it also houses a library of historical documents. The collection includes baskets and artwork by Native American groups, as well as a dugout canoe. A working blacksmith shop complements these historical themes with a look at traditional craftsmanship.

Two buildings also tell the story of the area’s past. Pittville Schoolhouse was built in 1884 and moved to its current location at the Fort Crook Museum in 1984, a hundred years later. Fall River Mills Jail was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and served the area until 1956. The museum’s visitor address is 43030 Fort Crook Museum Road, Fall River Mills, California 96028.

Places and Activities Nearby

For getting your bearings in town, Fall River Mills Ecological Reserve is on the western side of Fall River Mills, at the intersection of Curve Street and Highway 299. Pit River Campground is also nearby in eastern Shasta County. Its facilities include a kayak launch and an accessible fishing pier.

At nearby Big Lake, fishing and birdwatching are the main attractions; the area is rich in wildlife. Another option on the water is kayaking through Horr Pond to the headwaters, where Jashee Creek flows in from clear, tranquil springs. These options offer different experiences: the walk at Fall River Lake has a stated round-trip distance, while Big Lake and the kayaking route appeal to visitors interested in the water. This lets you plan your time around the places and activities that interest you most.
