Hillsborough’s history spans everything from mass concrete construction to 20th-century estates. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between them: historic buildings and properties tell different stories, while the small tours at Carolands offer a specific visit that requires a reservation. Conditions also vary across the open spaces: the city invites visitors to Vista Park, while Crocker Lake and Spencer Lake are not open to the public.

Engineering and Architecture

The Lower Crystal Springs Dam in Hillsborough was the first mass concrete dam built in the United States, and possibly the first in the world. This makes it a distinctive chapter in the history of engineering.

The Hofmann House was built in Hillsborough, California, in 1937. Under Criterion C, it is significant at the state level. It is considered an outstanding example both of Richard J. Neutra’s work in the San Francisco Bay Area and of the European-inspired International Style of the Modern Movement. The building’s significance is thus linked to a particular architect and a specific architectural movement.

Carolands is also known as The Chateau, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is designated a California State Landmark. Small curator-led tours of the château and gardens explore the estate’s history and classical architectural traditions. They take place on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., are free, and are available by reservation only. If you’d like to include a tour in your plans, book in advance.

Another architectural feature is the Carolands Gate House, a locally significant landmark at the corner of Ralston and Eucalyptus. It includes massive gates built in 1926 at the entrance to the Carolands residential area, as well as a French-designed lodge and garage dating from 1929, with an area of 1,000 square feet. The dates mark different phases of construction: the gates and the lodge and garage were not built at the same time.

The Changing Estates

Hillsborough’s history is about more than individual notable buildings. Between 1910 and 1938, Uplands, Home Place, La Dolphine and other grand estates were gradually subdivided into smaller lots. In most cases, the original house and several acres remained. Both individual architectural features and the transformation of the estates are therefore part of the area’s history.

Open Spaces and Recreation

Hillsborough has 259 acres of city-owned open space. These areas may not be developed or sold and are preserved in their natural state. They include Crocker Lake and Spencer Lake, neither of which is open to the public. This distinction matters when planning an outing: the lakes are part of the preserved open space, but they are not accessible destinations for visitors.

The city lists Vista Park as a place to visit. It is located at 1030 Vista Road, in the heart of Hillsborough between Culebra and Chiltern. The city welcomes visitors and their families to the park. These location details help distinguish the named park from the lakes, which are not open to the public.

The Crystal Springs Regional Trail offers a different range of activities: hiking, running, skating or roller skating, biking and horseback riding. The trail is planned as a 17.5-mile route between San Bruno and Woodside, of which 15.3 miles have been completed. The full route has therefore not yet been completed. This status is just as relevant to planning as the wide range of activities listed.

Which interests suit your trip?

If you’re interested in architecture and history, the information about Hofmann House, Carolands and the former grand estates offers different perspectives: a specific house, a designated estate with tours that require reservations, and the transformation of larger properties. For recreation, Vista Park and the activities available on the Crystal Springs Regional Trail are useful places to start. These options are not interchangeable: Carolands tours have a set time and require a reservation, while part of the trail’s planned route is not yet complete.
