Coronado Beach is a wide sandy beach about 1.75 miles long. A permanent lifeguard station at Central Beach is staffed year-round. This gives Coronado both a long stretch of coastline and a specifically named beach location.

Beaches, Parks, and Dogs

At the northern end of Coronado Beach is Dog Beach, a sandy area where dogs are allowed off leash. If you’re planning a beach visit with your dog, you can include this specifically named area in your choices. Coronado Cays Park also has an off-leash dog area, as well as pickleball courts. This means two different activities are available there.

Glorietta Bay Beach has a large grassy park. This makes it different from the wide sandy beach at Coronado Beach: here, a spacious green area is part of what’s on offer. Another coastal comparison is Silver Strand State Beach, 4.5 miles south of the city of Coronado. It includes 2½ miles of ocean beach and ½ mile of bay shoreline. So the figures distinguish not only the lengths, but also two types of waterfront.

Water Activities and Ferry Service

The Coronado Boathouse is at the southern end of Glorietta Bay Park and rents kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and rowboats. It operates on a reservation-based schedule. If you’re planning one of these activities, check the schedule again before your trip.

There is a public ferry landing and a boat pier with public access to the bay at the Coronado Ferry Landing. A city-subsidized ferry connects the Ferry Landing with the Broadway Pier in San Diego. It connects the two landings for pedestrians and cyclists. If this ferry service is part of your travel plans, check the schedule before you leave. The Coronado Ferry Landing opened in 1987.

Culture and Events

Coronado also has a connection to film history: “Some Like It Hot” was filmed at the Hotel del Coronado in 1958. The Coronado Historical Association Museum features changing exhibitions on a variety of topics related to Coronado. If you’re interested in a particular topic, you can check which exhibition is on display before your visit.

Spreckels Park hosts “Concerts in the Park.” If you’d like to include a concert in your stay, check the event dates in advance. Alongside the museum’s changing exhibitions, this makes for a cultural offering with different focuses: a dated film connection, exhibitions about Coronado, and a concert series in the park.

When looking for a vacation rental in Coronado, you can start by deciding what you want your stay to center on: beaches and green spaces, water activities, the ferry service, or culture. The places and offerings mentioned provide specific options to choose from. Also factor in the Boathouse’s reservation-based schedule, as well as ferry schedules and event dates, if they’re important to your trip.
