Tres Pinos combines local history with a hang-gliding training area. Its history comes to life through buildings, collections, the parish community, and the railroad; for hang gliding, the terrain, landing zone, and route are clearly described. When choosing a destination, you can weigh whether cultural history or a training site for the sport of flight is the stronger draw.

Historic Buildings and Collections

The Historical Village is located in the San Benito County Historical and Recreational Park at 8300 Airline Highway, one mile south of the town center. It is a diverse collection of historic buildings and artifacts on the park grounds. The Ferrando House is home to the San Juan Pacific Model Railroad Club exhibit; its tracks run through three rooms. This identifies not only the model railroad theme, but also the physical layout of the exhibit. The Village brings together historic buildings and objects with a dedicated model railroad exhibit.

Church History and the Railroad

The town’s church history has two notable milestones. The first Mass at Immaculate Conception Church was celebrated at daybreak on December 8, 1892. In 1904, Tres Pinos became an independent parish under the name Immaculate Conception; Rev. Emile Cota was its first pastor. Another historical thread begins earlier: the railroad reached Tres Pinos in 1873, making it a shipping point for grain and livestock from the valley. Religious development and freight transport thus offer distinct perspectives on local history.

Equestrian Memories and the Fair

The Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo Museum offers another perspective on local history. The Saddle Horse Show Association founded it in 1991. Mementos from years past include photographs, riding gear, saddles, and artworks by local Western artists. The collection thus ranges from photographic and practical mementos to Western art from the region. The museum has a narrower focus than the diverse collection at the Historical Village. The San Benito County Fair continues its tradition of family-friendly entertainment every year. If the fair is the reason for your trip, check the event dates in advance.

Hang-Gliding Training Area

Tres Pinos is a hang-gliding training site with practice slopes and a landing zone one mile long and half a mile wide. Gentle hills characterize the area; according to the operator, the winds are considered the most consistent and reliable in the entire Bay Area. These features describe both the terrain and the flying conditions at the training area. The hang-gliding site is accessible via Highway 25 and Quien Sabe Road. The parking area and meeting point with the flight instructor are at the first gate on the right. Confirm access arrangements before setting out.
