Seal Beach combines a strong connection to the coast with distinct nature and cultural themes. The city has 1.5 miles of beach stretching from 1st Street to Surfside; wide sandy areas and several surf spots define this stretch of coast. There are also good conditions for kitesurfing, a wooden pier and guided visits to a refuge with regulated access. When planning your trip, the question is therefore not only whether you want to spend time by the water, but also whether a pre-booked nature tour or Main Street suits your interests.

Beach, Surf Spots and Pier

The beach stretches for 1.5 miles, from 1st Street to Surfside. Wide sandy areas and several surf spots give the coastal theme a distinctive character. Conditions are also good for kitesurfing. If you want to plan your stay around the water, you can choose between time at the beach, surfing and kitesurfing as different focal points. Seal Beach’s wooden pier is the second-longest in the state of California. The beach, sandy areas and water sports form a clear coastal focus, while nature and city themes reveal other sides of the area.

Gum Grove and the Marshland

In Gum Grove Nature Park, a path shaded by eucalyptus trees runs through the middle of the park. The park borders the Los Cerritos Wetlands, located in the Seal Beach area. They are among approximately 30 remaining coastal salt marshes in Southern California. The park path and the wetlands offer different experiences: a shaded walk through the park on the one hand, and marshland in its regional context on the other. The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge is another part of the nature experience. It covers 965 acres and is located within the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.

Planning Guided Visits to the Refuge

Public access to the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge is limited to special events and guided tours. These are offered on the last Saturday of every month except December; advance registration is required. The free guided walks last about two hours and cover approximately one mile round trip. The tour includes time on an observation platform overlooking the marsh. This lets you consider the time required, route and viewpoint as one combined activity. Plan your visit around the scheduled date and check tour times and registration requirements in advance.

Main Street and Transportation History

Main Street has nearly 50 unique gift shops, art galleries and antique stores. For travelers who enjoy browsing shops and galleries, this offers a city experience alongside the beach and nature. The range of shop types gives this offering a concrete character without limiting your stay to a single activity.

Car 1734, the “Red Car,” is a Tower Car and one of 26 rolling repair vehicles used by Pacific Electric. This reference connects a specific vehicle name with a technical role at the transit company, offering a different cultural perspective from the beach and landscape themes.

The public restrooms at Seal Beach Pier have been upgraded for visitors to the beach and nearby park areas. This adds a specific visitor facility to the information for planning a beach or park visit.
