San Clemente offers several distinct highlights for a stay: coastal trails, beach scenery, nature and culture. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first organize your planned days around these interests. The Beach Trail provides a specific coastal route; Casa Romantica and other cultural attractions offer a different focus.

Beach Trail and Coastal Scenery

The 2.3-mile San Clemente Beach Trail connects North Beach with Calafia Beach and passes the pier and T-Street along the way. In summer, walkers, joggers, cyclists and dog owners use the trail. The sections between North Beach and Mariposa, and between Linda Lane and the pier, are accessible in accordance with ADA standards. If you include a particular section in your day’s plans, you can make a point of using these two accessible sections.

At San Clemente State Beach, rugged sandstone cliffs rise above a one-mile-long beach. A historic Spanish Colonial-style cottage serves as a visitor center there. The entrance to the state beach can be reached from Interstate 5 via the Avenida Calafia exit. Surf anglers also catch striped bass, croaker, corbina and white seabass at this beach. The beach trail, cliff scenery and surf fishing represent different ways to spend time on the coast.

Trails, Wildlife and Other Recreational Activities

San Clemente has five major trail systems that run from the beach to the canyons and along the ridgelines through the city. In total, there are 25.9 miles of hiking trails and 2 miles of public beaches. Bicycles are allowed on all trails; e-bike rules vary by trail. Horses are allowed on the Forster Ridgeline Trail, Prima Deshecha Trail and Cristianitos Trail. Trail conditions and rules can change; check the latest notices before setting out.

Deer, coyotes and bobcats are common along the trails. The local and seasonal birdlife is also diverse. So if you don’t want to plan your time outdoors solely around which route to take, wildlife offers another way to experience the trails. The San Clemente Municipal Golf Course covers 133 acres and offers public recreational opportunities to residents and visitors—another option alongside walking, cycling and horseback riding.

Architecture, History and Art

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is a museum, garden and performing arts venue housed in a historic residence. Ole Hanson built Casa Romantica in 1927 as a Spanish Colonial Revival-style home. Its former residential purpose and its current cultural use are therefore different chapters in the story of the same place.

The historic Ole Hanson Beach Club also has its own architectural history: it was built in 1928 and reopened in 2016. Artist demonstrations take place in the Ole Hanson Room at the San Clemente Community Center; dates may change. Admission to the San Clemente Art Association gallery is free. Check opening hours before your visit.
