California art, protected coastal waters and an extensive network of trails offer different ways to experience Laguna Beach. The Laguna Art Museum and the Sawdust Art Festival invite cultural discoveries, while the coast, walking paths and natural areas offer other points of focus. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether art, the coast, a shorter walk or a larger trail network should take center stage.

Art from California

The Laguna Art Museum was founded by local artists in 1918. For more than 100 years, it has collected and exhibited California art. Its permanent collection focuses on works created in California and highlights the connections between art, history and nature. The museum offers a cultural perspective on the state by placing these themes at the center together.

Another art destination is the Sawdust Art Festival. It showcases works by hundreds of local artists, and artist demonstrations are also part of the program. The museum and festival have different focuses: the museum centers on California art in a permanent collection, while the festival focuses on showcasing local artists and their work. Considering both offerings helps you distinguish between a collection and a festival program.

Coast and seascape

Laguna Beach's long-standing marine protected areas were expanded to form the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve. Several popular dive sites along the Laguna Beach coast are located within the reserve. Shaw's Cove is also within the reserve and is a special spot for observing tide pools. This brings different maritime interests into view: dive sites along the coast and tide pools at Shaw's Cove. You can clearly distinguish between the two when planning your trip.

Walks and parks

Heisler Park has a paved, half-mile path for walking. Numerous public artworks can be seen along the route. Here, a walking path and public art come together: the works are situated along the path, adding a cultural dimension to views of the park.

Main Beach Park has a different focus. It is located in the heart of downtown Laguna Beach. The public can use two half-court basketball courts and sand volleyball courts there. The parks therefore differ in their described offerings: Heisler Park centers on its path and public art, while Main Beach Park is notable for its downtown location and the sports facilities mentioned.

Trails, views and natural areas

Aliso and Wood Canyon Wilderness Park encompasses about 4,500 acres of wilderness and natural open space. It has more than 30 miles of official trails and is designated as a wildlife refuge. Compared with the half-mile path in Heisler Park, its trail network is on a different scale: one shorter walking path here, an extensive network in a large natural area there. The park's area and trail length describe two different aspects.

Top of the World is a viewpoint offering some of the best views in Laguna Beach, and also a starting point for trails in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Here, views and trail access come together. The location can be considered both as a viewpoint and in connection with the nature park's trail network.
