The parking lot at the Chaparral Trailhead on the west side of Pinnacles National Park is 12 miles from Soledad. This specific reference provides a useful starting point for planning a trip to the area’s hiking trails. The nearby park is also a nesting and release site for California condors.

Hiking in Pinnacles National Park

Two loop trails differ significantly in length and rating: the Balconies Cliffs–Balconies Cave Loop is 2.4 miles long and rated easy to moderate. Seasonal conditions in the cave can affect passage; check them before your hike. The Juniper Canyon Loop is longer at 4.3 miles and rated strenuous. It follows switchbacks toward the High Peaks.

You can start by choosing a route based on its length and difficulty: the Balconies Loop is shorter and rated easier, while the Juniper Canyon Loop is longer and more challenging. If your planned route includes California 146, you should also consider the road’s characteristics. It is winding and is one lane in places; RVs, large vehicles, and trailers are not recommended. Check current conditions before setting out.
