Mill Valley can be explored through several themes: the history of its sawmill and railroad, art exhibitions and summer concerts, as well as trails and parks. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider what you want to shape your stay: local history and cultural events, or outdoor activities. The range of options can help you choose what to focus on without having to combine everything into a single itinerary.

Local history: sawmill, railroad and cinema

The first sawmill in the San Francisco Bay Area stood on Cascade Creek; today, Old Mill Park occupies the site. The park is therefore a tangible link to the area’s early sawmill history. It can also be rented for group picnics. If a group picnic is part of your plans, the park is an option; use of it requires a rental.

There are also two ways to explore local railroad history. The Mountain Railroad Walk follows the original railroad tracks through Blithedale Canyon, with 13 stops along the way. From 1896 to 1930, the Mill Valley and Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway carried passengers through redwood forests, over creeks and up the steep slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. The walk and the railroad’s history draw attention both to a surviving route and to how the railroad was used in the past.

Another historic date belongs to cinema history: the Sequoia Theater opened as a movie theater with one screen and 1,200 seats on February 21, 1929. Its timeline overlaps with the railroad’s history: the Railway continued to carry passengers until 1930. This makes it possible to consider transportation history and cinema history side by side in time, without treating them as the same development.

Art and seasonal cultural events

The First Tuesday ArtWalk features monthly art exhibitions at Mill Valley City Hall and the Community Center. The Mill Valley Arts Commission also publishes a monthly gallery guide. In addition, the Concerts in the Plaza series takes place during the summer months. The distinction matters when planning your schedule: the exhibitions are held monthly, while the concert series is seasonal. If art or live music affects your travel dates, check the specific event dates and current program in advance, as program details may change.

Trails, park amenities and recreation

Mill Valley has more than 175 original stairways, alleyways and trails. Alongside this variety of routes are individual park and sports amenities. Bayfront Park is on Richardson Bay, off Sycamore Avenue, and has a hiking and running trail. Mill Valley Golf Course is a nine-hole golf course. The options therefore range from a trail for hiking and running to golf—two different ways to plan outdoor activities.

The Dipsea Trail also offers a specific point of reference for navigating the route: after a crossing, it continues along the hillside above the road. Trail conditions and race-day checks may change, so check the latest information before planning a specific hike along the route. The Dipsea Race course is separate from this: it starts in downtown Mill Valley and passes through Old Mill Park. The start point and the park are two clearly identified reference points along the race course.

Nature in your regional itinerary

In the wider region, Muir Woods National Monument offers a different scale of outdoor activities. The monument protects 554 acres of old-growth redwood forest and offers both short, easy walks and challenging hikes spanning several miles. This range is useful for planning: a short walk and a longer, challenging hike call for different amounts of time. Reservations are required for anyone visiting the monument in a private vehicle or using the shuttle. Check the National Park Service’s current reservation information in advance, as the rules may change.

You can organize your stay around a clear focus: art and music depend more on event dates; the historical connections run from the sawmill to the railroad and then to the cinema; park trails and golf offer other ways to spend time outdoors. For a nature outing in the region, there are also the different walking and hiking options at Muir Woods National Monument. Which of these themes matters most to you can help you choose when to travel and decide which experiences to plan.
