Bass Lake is a pine-fringed reservoir, about a half-hour drive south of the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. The water, hiking trails, and cultural history offer different ways to shape your stay. When choosing where to stay, you might first ask whether you want to focus mainly on the public boat ramp, a day by the lake, or specific hiking routes. The drive time is approximate; travel times on roads vary.
Reservoir, Boat Ramp, and Campground
The lake sits at an elevation of 3,400 feet; in summer, its surface water warms to about 75°F. The Bass Lake Boat Ramp is a public boat ramp and a specific point of interest for boat-related planning. Check current conditions before setting out, as details about facilities may change. Wishon Campground is across from Bass Lake. If you plan to stay there, check reservations and conditions before you arrive.
Hiking Trails with Different Profiles
The Way of the Mono Trail is a 0.6-mile loop leading to a rock with great views. The trail also offers opportunities for bouldering. Information panels provide insights into the Mono way of life and traditions, as well as their close connection to the land. Some panels may be missing or damaged. Trail conditions can change; check before setting out.
The other two hikes described also differ in length and difficulty: the hike to the Goat Mountain Fire Lookout is a challenging five-mile out-and-back route. The Willow Creek Trail is shorter, at three miles, and moderately difficult; seasonal water conditions call for caution there.
Day Use and the Lake’s History
The Falls Beach day-use area at Bass Lake has barbecue facilities, picnic tables, and drinking water, as well as places to play and swim. These amenities are one specific option for a day visit, whether or not you also plan to hike one of the trails described. Visitor facilities may change; check current conditions before you arrive.
Bass Lake was formed by construction of the 145-foot-high Crane Valley Dam across Willow Creek, a tributary of the San Joaquin River. This connects the reservoir’s origins with a specific structure and the creek across which the dam was built.
Annual Art Banners
Bass Lake is part of the Community Art Banner Trail. This annual program features banners showcasing local art along the streets of participating communities from Memorial Day weekend through ARTober. Check the dates and participating displays again for your travel dates.
