When planning a trip around Ahwahnee, you can explore several themes: nature and trails in Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park, the history of a traditional gathering place at Wassama Round House State Historic Park, and activities along the nearby Fresno River. The history of the Ahwahnee Tavern adds a historical perspective, while Gathering Day provides a specific date in October.

Wassama Round House and Gathering Day

Wassama Round House State Historic Park preserves a traditional gathering place of the Southern Sierra Miwok. The Wassama Roundhouse was reconstructed in 1985 on the site of the four former roundhouses, which predated the 1860s.

Gathering Day takes place annually on the third Saturday in October. Activities include demonstrations of dancing, arts and crafts, and basket weaving. If you want to plan your trip around this day, check the program for the relevant year before you arrive.

Day use at Wassama Round House State Historic Park is free. Since day-use rules can change, check the current regulations before your visit.

The Ahwahnee Tavern: Road and Local History

The two-story Ahwahnee Tavern served as a stagecoach stop and lunch station on the road from Raymond to Wawona. In 1918, the tavern and associated ranch were sold to Madera, Merced, and Stanislaus counties to establish the Tri-County Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Its history thus connects a specific roadside function with a later sale intended to establish the sanatorium.

Nature Park, Trails, and Oak Woodland

Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park is a 466-acre nature park in the community of Ahwahnee, on Highway 49 in Madera County. About one mile of its trails is wheelchair-accessible. The two measurements answer different planning questions: 466 acres describes the size of the nature park, while about one mile indicates the length of the wheelchair-accessible trails. When choosing trails, the mileage is the more specific guide; the acreage describes the park as a whole.

The Interpretive Center is intended to present the park’s history and natural features. The Oak Acorn Center is intended to inform the public and school groups about oak woodland habitat. Their aims therefore differ in focus: one highlights the park’s history and nature, while the other focuses on a particular habitat and the groups it serves.

Activities along the Fresno River

The Fresno River Recreation Area is near Ahwahnee and provides access to the Fresno River. Water activities and nature watching are possible there; gold panning is permitted with authorization from the Central Valley Prospectors Club. If you plan to pan for gold, check the authorization requirement before your visit. Since access conditions can change, it is also advisable to check the current conditions in advance.
