Discover Arcata through a range of themes: wetlands and forest trails, natural history offerings, historic sites and a recurring event. When planning your visit, it helps to decide whether you want to focus on a short loop, longer trails, museum offerings or an event date.

Wetlands and Trails in Arcata

The Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary covers 307 acres. Its landscape includes freshwater, saltwater and brackish marshes, tidal sloughs, grassland and mudflats. This variety makes the area a distinctive focus for a stay in Arcata. At the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, you can explore interactive exhibits that offer another way to learn about the area.

The trails also vary in length and character. The self-guided loop at Butcher’s Slough Log Pond is an easy two-thirds-of-a-mile loop. If you’re looking for a longer route, the Arcata Community Forest has 11 miles of trails in total for hiking, biking, running and horseback riding. This figure refers to trails in the forest, not to a single 11-mile route.

The Arcata Ridge Trail is a 4.5-mile route from West End Road to Buttermilk Lane. It passes through Sunny Brae Forest and Arcata Community Forest. Hikers, cyclists and horseback riders can travel north to south within the city limits along this route without leaving the slopes covered in redwood forest. This makes it a different scale of trail from the short Butcher’s Slough loop; the easy rating applies specifically to that loop.

Natural History Offerings and History

The Cal Poly Humboldt Natural History Museum combines collections and exhibits with programs that foster understanding and appreciation of the dynamic natural world. Themed Discovery Days feature hands-on activities for the whole family. Natural history evening talks focus on different topics and offer a chance to explore individual subjects in more depth. Program dates and talk schedules may change, so check the current calendar before your visit.

Arcata Plaza is designated a local historic landmark. Another notable historic building is Jacoby’s Storehouse: the fully restored building is a California State Historic Landmark. When it was completed in 1857, it was the only fireproof building in Humboldt County. Its designation and early history give the site a distinct cultural and historical significance, setting it apart from the nature and trail offerings.

Market and Kinetic Grand Championship

The Arcata Farmers Market takes place year-round every Saturday, rain or shine. Offerings include produce, meat, cheese, crafts and freshly prepared food. The selection therefore ranges from food to handmade goods. As market hours may change, it’s a good idea to check the current schedule in advance.

Another reason to plan a trip is the Kinetic Grand Championship. The three-day event begins in Arcata each May and ends in Ferndale; the exact dates may change. Participants propel enormous mobile sculptures across land, sand, water and mud. As a spectator, you can follow the imaginative sculptures and costumes and vote for your favorite teams. If you’re planning to travel for the event, check the dates for that year’s edition before making plans.
