Pilot Hill offers points of interest for nature and history enthusiasts. Cronan Ranch is designated exclusively for day use; the Grange, Bayley House, and Pilot Hill Cemetery represent different chapters of local history. This means your choice of activities for the day depends on whether you want to explore trails and enjoy recreation or delve into the history of individual sites.

Trails, Recreation, and the River

The Cronan Ranch Trailhead in Pilot Hill has a total of 12 miles of trails. The corridor trail associated with Cronan Ranch along the South Fork American River runs from Greenwood Creek to Salmon Falls. The ranch is designated exclusively for day use; keep this limitation in mind when planning your overnight stay. Cronan Ranch was placed in a public trust for recreation and wildlife protection. Recreation and wildlife protection are therefore both part of the area’s purpose. The 12 miles refer to the trails at the trailhead; Greenwood Creek and Salmon Falls, by contrast, mark the endpoints of the corridor trail.

The Acorn Creek Trailhead at Salmon Falls Ranch has a large gravel parking lot and a portable toilet; drinking water is not available. Factor these amenities into your day’s plans, especially if you are heading to this trailhead. As a separate river-related activity, the South Fork American River offers opportunities for whitewater rafting and kayaking. It is accessible from many points along Highway 49. Trails, water sports, and the specific amenities at the Acorn Creek Trailhead are distinct considerations for your planning.

Grange History and Historic Buildings

Pilot Hill Grange No. 1 was organized on August 10, 1870, with 29 founding members. The Grange Hall at this site was dedicated on November 23, 1889—about 19 years after the organization was founded. The site of California’s first Grange Hall is on State Highway 49, 0.2 miles north of Pilot Hill. The dates distinguish the organization’s founding from the later dedication; the road directions locate the historic site.

Different details stand out at Bayley House: construction began in 1861, and the house was built with 22 rooms. Unlike the Grange information, these details concern the start of construction and the number of rooms in a building. Together, these historic topics offer different perspectives on the local past, without requiring you to explore them in any particular order.

The Gold Rush Era and the Landscape

Pilot Hill Cemetery, also known as Centerville Cemetery, was established in 1850 at the beginning of the Gold Rush to serve the community of Centerville. Its founding year predates the Grange dates mentioned above; the name Centerville also preserves its connection to the community for which the cemetery was established. Its location in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, amid gently rolling pastureland and horse farms, gives this historic site a rural setting. Here, early community history and Gold Rush history are connected to a clearly described landscape. The cemetery thus adds another point of historical interest alongside the Grange and building histories.
