Fiddletown is located on the North Fork of Dry Creek in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Its history connects settlement by residents from Missouri, trade with mining camps, and a large Chinese community in the 19th century. For planning your trip, the landscape and local history go hand in hand: the street layout, historic buildings, a walking tour with numbered stops, and events offer a range of points of interest.

Gold Rush, Trade, and Chinese History

Fiddletown was settled in 1849 by residents from Missouri. The town was a trading center for American, Loafer and French Flats, Lone Hill, and other productive mining camps. These specific camps give the Gold Rush history a local context. By the late 1850s, Fiddletown was home to a large Chinese community. Settlement and community mark two distinct points in time in the town’s history.

The Chew Kee Store is a Chinese rammed-earth building that was established as an herb shop during the Gold Rush. The largely preserved building is one of only four surviving remnants of Fiddletown’s once-thriving Chinese community. The Chew Kee Store thus connects a specific former business use with the history of that community.

The Chinese Gambling House is part of a group of buildings on Main Street dating from 1855 to 1860. Its side walls are made of natural stone, and its façade of locally fired bricks. Comparing the two buildings highlights the difference in their surviving details: at the Chew Kee Store, the former use as an herb shop takes center stage; at the Chinese Gambling House, it is the distinctive combination of building materials.

Townscape and Historic Walking Tour

The street layout also helps put Fiddletown’s townscape into context. Main Street runs parallel to Dry Creek to the south, while Jibboom Street runs parallel to the creek to the north. A historic walking tour through Fiddletown includes 18 numbered stops. This brings individual buildings, their construction methods, and former uses together with a tour that organizes the town’s history into a series of stops.

Events and Planning

The annual Fiddlers’ Jam takes place on the third Saturday in September; the schedule may change. So check the dates for the edition that matches your trip. House Concerts are held in Fiddletown and at the historic Fiddletown Community Center; you should also check the dates of individual concerts before your trip. The planning considerations differ: the Fiddlers’ Jam follows an annual September pattern, while House Concerts depend on the dates of each event.

Fiddletown’s 1862 schoolhouse serves as a venue for special events. If you are planning to visit on a particular date, confirm availability in advance.

Fiddletown Park was closed from May 26 through September 18, 2026, for improvement work on its tennis and basketball courts. Since that period has now passed, check the current status if you plan to include the park in your stay.
