Around Bull Shoals, lake activities, Ozark scenery and culture are among the many facets of a stay. Bull Shoals-White River State Park lies along the shores of Bull Shoals Lake and the White River. Its setting therefore encompasses both a lake and a river. The attractions offer different focuses for your plans: water sports, trails and viewpoints, as well as cultural history and nature watching.

Water and Scenery

Activities available in the Bull Shoals Lake area include boating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving and swimming. At Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock, boats are available to rent for fishing, water skiing and general trips on the lake. This means the choices range from various activities around the lake to a ride in a rented boat. If you are planning to rent a boat, check the current offerings in advance.

Trails, Views and Nature Watching

The Roy Danuser Trail in Bull Shoals begins in Roy Danuser City Park and ends at the Bull Shoals-White River State Park visitor center. It has a newly built one-mile loop and a spur. This distinction matters when planning your route: the one-mile figure refers to the loop; the spur is an additional section of trail.

The Big Bluff Trail offers views of the White River, Bull Shoals Dam and the Ozark hills. Eagle Point on the Lakeside Trail offers a different perspective on nature: bald eagles, waterfowl and gulls are often spotted there in winter. The two trails therefore have different highlights—scenic views on the Big Bluff Trail and seasonal bird watching on the Lakeside Trail.

History and Culture

The James A. Gaston Visitor Center features interpretive exhibits, a theater, an observation tower with a viewing deck and a gift shop. Bull Shoals Dam was dedicated by President Harry S. Truman on July 2, 1952. For a look at the area’s history, this combines a milestone with a precise date and a visitor center featuring several exhibition options and an observation tower.

The Bull Shoals Theater of Arts is a venue for live performances by local Ozark-area artists. Ted's Lil Opry is a Monday evening program at the theater. Admission is free; check the current schedule and admission policy before your visit.

Caves and Ozark Heritage

Bull Shoals Caverns is a living limestone cave system that is approximately 350 million years old and continues to grow, with underground streams and formations. The cave thus combines a very great approximate age with ongoing development. At Bull Shoals Caverns & Mountain Village 1890, visitors can pan for gems from genuine rough stone at the sluice there.

Mountain Village 1890 is a recreated Ozark settlement with authentic historic buildings that were moved to this site from elsewhere in the 19th century. This offers a different focus from the cave: here, the emphasis is on a historic settlement and its buildings; there, on a natural limestone system. Together with the theater and waterfront attractions, these offer a range of cultural and scenic interests, without suggesting that every stop promises the same kind of experience.
