In Lawrence County, discoveries range from Beatles memories in Walnut Ridge to historic buildings and landscapes along the Black River. Different stories take center stage: rock music, the architecture of small towns and the nature of the river lowlands. You can decide which one shapes your trip based on your interests.

Music memories in Walnut Ridge

In Beatles Park, the sculpture “The British Invasion of the Rock n’ Roll Highway” is on display. It is permanently exhibited at 110 Abbey Road. If you would like to visit, check local conditions in advance. Another Beatles discovery is the Argenta Collection: its archive displays photographs of the band, including many images that have never been published before. The collection is open to the public at the Lawrence County Library in downtown Walnut Ridge. Check the library’s access arrangements in advance.

At Cavenaugh Park, the Guitar Walk commemorates early rock-and-roll musicians. The installation is a 115-foot-long Epiphone Casino guitar; those honored are Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Conway Twitty. A free audio narration by Sonny Burgess complements the Guitar Walk. If you are visiting in September, the Beatles at the Ridge Music Festival offers another musical connection: it is held annually on the third Saturday of the month. Check the current event date for your travel year.

A change of musical theme leads to the Wings of Honor World War II Museum, whose extensive collection includes aircraft nose art from World War II. The offerings thus bring Beatles photography and rock-and-roll memories together with a collection devoted to a very different chapter of history.

Architecture and history in various locations

The historic buildings differ in age, function and construction. Powhatan Methodist Church is a timber-frame church built in 1872 in the Greek Revival style, and is one of the sites in Lawrence County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cache River Bridge, also listed on the register, is a Parker pony truss bridge built in 1934 in rural Lawrence County. The Missouri-Pacific Depot in Walnut Ridge dates from around 1910, is built in the Mediterranean style and is also among the listed sites. The depot’s approximate date and the buildings’ distinctly different styles each give them their own historic character.

The Walnut Ridge Commercial Historic District brings together a concentration of preserved historic commercial buildings downtown. The district has local historic and architectural significance and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Other landmarks are connected to public institutions: the Smithville Public School Building was built in 1936 from fieldstone by the Works Progress Administration. The historic complex in the Clover Bend Historic District includes a high school and other buildings constructed between 1937 and 1942 as part of a Farm Security Administration project.

Hoxie’s school history is another notable historical theme in the region: its public schools were desegregated in June 1955, making them among the first several school systems in Arkansas to take this step. At Powhatan Historic State Park, seven historic buildings stand on their original sites; they date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The 1888 courthouse houses exhibits about trade and culture in Powhatan and the surrounding Lawrence County. It is free to the public; check current visitor conditions before your visit. Tours of the other historic buildings are available, but you should check their availability in advance. The park is also home to the Northeast Arkansas Regional Archives, where more than 200 years of historical documents are available to the public. Check archive access in advance.

River landscapes, wildlife watching and trails

The Black River divides the Shirey Bay Rainey Brake WMA. Most of the area consists of bottomland hardwood forest; birdwatching and wildlife photography are possible activities there. On the west bank, near Horseshoe Lake, a concrete boat ramp is available. Fishing is possible in Horseshoe Lake and Hill Slough. The WMA thus offers different ways to experience the landscape: observing wildlife in the forest, fishing by the water or using the ramp.

For walking or cycling, Walnut Ridge offers a 6.5-mile paved rail trail. It runs from the Williams Baptist University campus to Hoxie and is intended for hiking and biking. Check the trail’s condition before setting out. The Black River Trail has a different focus: it follows the elevated bank of the Black River through the surrounding forest, passes the gate of Phillips/Reeves Cemetery and continues to the dam on the south side of Trapper Lake. The trails differ mainly in their surface and their riverside or forest setting, as well as in the specific landmarks along their routes.

US 67 also preserves a tangible layer of the past: the section between Alicia and Hoxie is approximately 11.25 miles long and still has its original 1930 concrete surface. Complementing the historic buildings, this stretch of road shows that the region’s history can be read not only in individual structures but also in its infrastructure.
