Batesville is on the White River in north-central Arkansas. If you’d like to combine time by the water with cultural discoveries, the city offers parks and trails as well as historic buildings, museums, and event venues. When planning, you can focus on outdoor activities, local history, or seasonal events.

River, Parks, and Trails

The Batesville Greenway is a multi-use trail for running, walking, cycling, and other non-motorized forms of travel. Riverside Park is on the White River. Its amenities include playgrounds, walking paths, pavilions, and a large amphitheater.

At Kennedy Park, the Mark House Memorial Boat Ramp and its adjoining pavilion provide access to the White River. Reservations may be required to use the pavilion. Hobo Beach is on the riverbank on the Batesville side and offers opportunities for bouldering and swimming. As riverbank conditions can change, check them before visiting. Poke Bayou flows into the White River; fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are possible on the bayou.

The Lyon College Bluff Trail has an entrance for cyclists and hikers behind the Lyon Building, as well as a separate stairway entrance for hikers and runners. The trail is closed to visitors between dusk and dawn. Keep this time restriction in mind when planning.

Another option for active recreation is the Batesville Community Center and Aquatics Park, which features a 25,000-square-foot gymnasium, an indoor pool with multiple pools, two outdoor two-story water slides, and a 400-meter lazy river. As operations may change, check current operating conditions before visiting.

Buildings, Museums, and Culture

The Batesville Commercial Historic District comprises 52 buildings, most of them along Main Street between 4th and State. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. George Case built the Garrott House in 1842. In 1971, it became the first structure in Batesville to be added to the National Register.

The building’s history also shapes a visit to the Old Independence Regional Museum: it is housed in a former National Guard armory built as a WPA project in 1936. Historical exhibits include “Where the Delta Meets the Ozarks” and “Region on the Move”; exhibits may change.

The Melba Theater is an Art Deco movie theater that also serves as a venue for concerts, presentations, private screenings, and benefit events. The Mark Martin Museum displays several of Mark Martin’s race cars alongside high-tech interpretive exhibits. The two venues offer different experiences: architecture and events at one, racing and its history at the other.

Festivals and Seasonal Events

Lyon College hosts the Arkansas Scottish Festival every October. The program includes Highland Games, Celtic music, and traditional Scottish food. Dates and program details may change, so check the information for the year of your trip.

Riverside Park hosts the White River Water Carnival and the Fourth of July Celebration. In winter, Batesville becomes the “Christmas Capital of Arkansas.” In the 35-acre Riverside Park, visitors can enjoy millions of dancing lights, carriage rides, ice skating, a parade, a Ferris wheel, and free movies. Seasonal offerings may vary from year to year. If you’re traveling for a festival or the winter attractions, check the dates and program for your travel period.
