In Monticello, natural history and the past meet fishing opportunities, a trail system geared toward mountain biking, and public programs at the planetarium. When planning your trip, it helps to consider these different highlights separately: Some visits depend on an appointment or program, while others invite you to explore the landscape, architecture, and locally made goods.

Lake and Trails: Two Outdoor Highlights

Lake Monticello is a 1,520-acre reservoir managed by the City of Monticello. Fishing is available at the lake. The Lakewoods Trail System offers a different focus: it is optimized for mountain biking. Phase 1 includes about 6 miles of a shared-use, non-motorized trail system. The mileage refers to this first phase. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different interests: fishing at the reservoir or mountain biking on the trail system designed for it.

This brief comparison helps you decide which part of the offerings interests you most, without combining the lake and trails into a single excursion. The lake is described as a reservoir, with its size and municipal management noted; the trails are characterized by their focus and the scope of Phase 1. If you consider both when planning your trip, keep these differences in mind.

Natural History and Local History at the Museums

The Turner Neal Museum of Natural History displays materials on invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, as well as fossils, minerals, and plants. Visits are subject to specific conditions: during the academic year, from September to April, the museum is open Monday through Friday by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance; operating details may change seasonally.

The Drew County Historical Museum is housed in the Cavaness House, a 14-room mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its antiques relate to the history of Drew County. Featured items include a walnut bed with turned spindles and blue glass chandeliers that originally belonged to the Cavaness House. There are also themed rooms dedicated to musical instruments, children’s toys, military objects, and artifacts from Indigenous American cultures. The museum visit ranges from individual objects connected to the house to rooms covering a variety of subjects.

Historic Districts and City Culture

The North Main Street Historic District includes Monticello’s oldest residential area. The houses there date from approximately 1880 to 1920. The Monticello Commercial Historic District offers a different historical perspective: it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 23, 2011. These details distinguish between a residential area with houses from an approximate period and a commercial district with a precisely dated register listing.

The Monticello Mural is also one of the city’s cultural landmarks. It is located next to City Hall in Monticello’s Historic Downtown Business District. To get a sense of Monticello’s city culture, you can visit a named residential district, a commercial historic district, and a mural at a precisely specified location.

Programs and Local Goods

The Pomeroy Planetarium regularly offers organized programs and presentations for the general public. If you want to include one in your plans, check the schedule in advance. This sets the planetarium apart from historic sites and collections: organized presentations are the main reason to visit.

The Market in the Park brings together local growers, cooks, and artisans. Offerings include homegrown, homemade, and handcrafted goods. Unlike a museum visit, the focus here is on the participants’ products and work. Monticello offers a range of different interests, including natural history, county history, architecture, public programs, locally made goods, and opportunities at the lake and on the mountain-bike-optimized trail system.
