Quartzsite brings together expansive desert landscapes, trails, minerals, and seasonal events. Two occasions make it especially easy to choose when to visit: the PowWow Gem and Mineral Show takes place every January, while thousands of vendors gather during the winter season with a wide range of goods. When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering whether you are most interested in nature, minerals, or seasonal events.

Desert Landscapes and La Posa

The La Posa Long Term Visitor Area was established in 1983 for winter visitors. Its purpose is to protect the local desert ecosystem from overuse. The camping area covers approximately 11,400 acres of flat, sparsely vegetated desert landscape. Plants found there include creosote bushes, palo verde, ironwood, and mesquite trees, as well as various types of cactus. The combination of flat terrain and sparse vegetation shapes the character of this landscape.

La Posa offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, and rock and mineral collecting. The entrances to the four areas—North, South, West, and Tyson Wash—are about 2 miles south of Quartzsite. Access is via Highway 95 after exiting Interstate 10 at Quartzsite. Road conditions can change, so check them before you set out.

Trails and Activities

Quartzsite itself also has hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, biking, and ATV exploration. These three activities offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors. When planning your trip, you can decide which type of exploration interests you; the options include trails for walking as well as opportunities for biking and ATV rides.

Minerals and Local History

The Quartzsite Museum features a blacklight exhibit of fluorescent minerals commonly found in the region. The museum grounds also include the original assay office from the Mariquita Mine. The museum’s exhibits thus combine a mineral display with a tangible artifact connected to mining. They complement the rock and mineral collecting offered at the La Posa Visitor Area.

Winter Events

The PowWow Gem and Mineral Show takes place every January in Quartzsite. Another recurring event is the annual Hi Jolly Parade. It commemorates Quartzsite’s historic connection to the U.S. Army Camel Corps, led by Hadji Ali, who was nicknamed “Hi Jolly.” The parade features live camels, themed floats, and participation from the local community; the specific program may vary.

During the winter season, thousands of vendors gather in Quartzsite. They offer rocks, gemstones, and minerals, as well as jewelry, clothing, home décor, and other goods. The seasonal vendor activity is a different focus from the January show or the parade. Individual vendors and dates may change.

Plan Your Stay

If you are mainly interested in trails and desert landscapes, the information about La Posa and the trails in Quartzsite provides a useful starting point. Travelers can explore minerals both at the museum exhibit and at seasonal events. January is the stated time for the PowWow Gem and Mineral Show; the vendor offerings are tied to the winter season. This lets you consider nature, the museum, and events as distinct interests without combining them into a single program.
