Ganado offers two distinct focal points for a stay: the history of the Navajo Nation at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site and Sage Memorial, and activities at Ganado Lake. The historic sites and the lake appeal to different interests. Together, they give your trip planning a cultural focus and a nature-oriented one.

Cultural Heritage in Ganado

The National Park Service lists the “Sage Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Ganado Mission” as a National Historic Landmark in Ganado, Apache County, Arizona. The landmark designation is dated January 16, 2009. The history of Ganado Mission Church and Sage Memorial Hospital can also be traced through specific dates.

Ganado Mission Church, the first church building of Ganado Mission, was built in 1906. A new hospital building was constructed in 1930 and named Sage Memorial Hospital. The hospital’s School of Nursing received accreditation in the early 1930s. These dates mark different milestones: the construction of the church, the establishment of the hospital, and the later accreditation of its nursing program.

Hubbell Trading Post: Trade and Cultural Landscape

Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site preserves the oldest continuously operated trading post in the Navajo Nation. The site is primarily a historic, traditional cultural landscape dating from 1878 to 1967. The trading operation and this explicitly defined landscape period offer two different ways of looking at the site.

At the Hubbell Trading Post visitor center, you can try weaving on a loom yourself. The Veterans Trail runs along the Pueblo Colorado Wash at the site. The location can also be pinpointed: Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is at milepost 446.3 on AZ Route 264, about 1.6 kilometers west of Ganado.

Fishing and Camping at Ganado Lake

Fishing is possible at Ganado Lake. Fish species found there include largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish.

A 2006 watershed plan also mentions camping opportunities at Ganado Lake. Since this camping information comes from an older plan, check local conditions before your trip.

The Ralph Johnson Memorial Rodeo

The Ralph Johnson Memorial Rodeo is an annual event in Ganado. The first rodeo honoring Ralph Johnson was held in 1967. A 2024 report lists May and Memorial Day weekend as the dates for the annual rodeo. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance.

The rodeo makes a different difference to your choice of travel dates than the historic themes: it offers an annual, seasonal occasion, while the sites’ history can be understood through construction dates and the landscape period. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Ganado, first consider whether you want to plan your dates around the rodeo or arrange your stay independently around the cultural themes and Ganado Lake.
