Art and Curious Collections

The Museum of Wonder Drive-Thru Museum is a free, accessible art experience and is open 24 hours a day. The museum features a rotating exhibition of handmade designs and curiosities by Butch Anthony. Advance appointments are required for tours of the original Museum of Wonder.

Buildings in Crawford also tell different stories about local life. The Crawford Masonic Lodge was built in 1848 as Tuckabatchee Masonic Lodge No. 96 and now serves as a community center and museum. Crawford Park at the Historic Tuckabatchee Masonic Lodge opened in May 2015. The park is home to the Crockettsville Store Museum, which serves as a local community museum. The Crawford community in Russell County is also home to the paved Crawford Walking Trail, which is 0.25 miles long.

History in Fort Mitchell and Old Seale

The Fort Mitchell Historic Site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. It includes a reconstruction of the fort built in 1813, which was an important U.S. military post during the Creek War. Displays at the Chattahoochee Indian Heritage Center in Fort Mitchell provide information about the Creek War and the forced relocation of the Creeks to Indian Territory. The historic site is open during its regular hours; check the schedule before you arrive.

The Old Seale Courthouse can also be viewed through the history of its construction: the red bricks of the present building were added in 1908. Following extensive renovations, it now serves as a community center and event venue. The building thus combines a visible architectural detail with present-day community use.

Activities on the Chattahoochee River

Rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and canoeing are available on the Chattahoochee River whitewater section in Phenix City. Fishing, hiking, paddling, and biking are also among the activities available along this same section. The Chattahoochee Paddle Company offers kayak and canoe rentals on the Chattahoochee River. The options range from activities on the water to things to do on land.

The Phenix City Riverwalk is a 1.21-mile facility on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River. A shaded section near the Phenix City Amphitheater offers the chance to observe wildlife. Alongside activities on the water, it is a place where wildlife watching takes center stage.

Art, Motorsports, and a Camping Option

The Idle Hour Mural measures 28 × 40 feet and depicts the midway at Idle Hour Park in the 1940s. The East Alabama Motor Speedway offers a very different focus: its clay oval is 3/8 mile long and banked. These two places complement the historic buildings and museums with very different attractions—public art and motorsports.

For travelers looking to include camping, Bluff Creek Campground offers 77 campsites with electric and water hookups.
