Opelika offers a range of ways to spend your stay: exploring local history, observing nature and enjoying active recreation. History takes center stage at the Museum of East Alabama, Spring Villa and in Downtown Opelika; trails and birdwatching define the experience at Wood Duck Nature Park. Golf, pickleball and a concert series add to the options. To plan your trip, you can first decide which of these themes you’d like to shape your stay.

History at the Museum, Park and Downtown

The Museum of East Alabama opened in August 1989 in Opelika’s historic downtown district, on the site of the former Clement Hotel. Its collection includes more than 5,000 artifacts representing the history of Opelika, the East Alabama region and the state of Alabama. A visit to the museum therefore reaches beyond local history to regional and statewide connections. Admission is free; this information was checked on September 5, 2026. Please check it again before your trip.

Spring Villa was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 3, 1978. Spring Villa is also a 350-acre park. These provide two distinct points of reference: a precisely dated register listing and the size of the park. If you’d like to combine cultural and historical connections with a visit to a park, this is a clearly defined highlight in Opelika.

The years refer to different events: 1989 is the year the museum opened, while 1978 is the year Spring Villa was added to the register. Together, they offer two ways to explore history: the story of a cultural institution and a park’s listing on the National Register.

Downtown Opelika is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is also home to specialty shops, galleries, antique stores and restaurants. If you enjoy planning a stay around a variety of stops, you can combine the area’s historic character with shopping, a gallery visit or a meal.

Nature Watching at Wood Duck Nature Park

More than 170 bird species have been recorded at Wood Duck Nature Park. More than two miles of heavily wooded trails lead to two observation blinds overlooking the lagoon. The number of recorded species makes nature watching a highlight in its own right; the trails and blinds also offer concrete points of reference when choosing a nature outing.

Sports and Events

The Grand National Golf Course in Opelika is a public 54-hole golf course. The Opelika Pickleball Facility offers a different kind of sporting activity and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Each sport has different planning considerations: check the pickleball facility’s opening hours before your visit; golf booking details may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information if you’re planning a round.

The Annual Summer Swing Concert Series takes place every year at Municipal Park. It runs for 13 weeks, with concerts every Tuesday evening. Check the current season’s dates before your trip.
