A small supply shed for William Larkin Williams was the first structure in what is now Atmore. In 1866, Williams Station was founded as a lumber community along the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad. These early milestones provide a concrete starting point for the city’s history: the development of a community whose name is still part of Atmore today.

Williams Station and Downtown

With Williams Station Day, Atmore continues to commemorate its roots as Williams Station. Downtown Atmore is one of America’s newest National Register Districts and serves as a community gathering place for playing, dining, shopping, working, and living. Those who want to focus on history can also visit relocated historic buildings at Atmore Heritage Park. The park is also home to the Atmore Welcome Center, a splash pad, and playground equipment.

The Poarch Creek Indians Museum offers a distinct cultural focus. It showcases early Muskogee Creek village life through stoneware, pottery, tools, baskets, and textiles. Traditional Creek art includes baskets, pottery, and textiles, as well as shellwork, copperwork, and quilts. Tours led by knowledgeable staff are available. In contrast to Heritage Park, whose historic buildings were relocated, the museum focuses on early village life and traditional art.

Forest, Water, and Activities

Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve encompasses about 6,000 acres of forest, 12 miles of shoreline directly along Big Escambia Creek, and numerous lakes. The Perdido River offers a different connection to the natural surroundings of Atmore: it begins about 8 miles northwest of the city in Escambia County, Alabama. In the Atmore area, it is a blackwater river that flows through wooded swamps and wetlands. There are opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and drift fishing there.

For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between these natural features: Magnolia Branch is known for its forest, creek shoreline, and lakes; the Perdido River is defined by its blackwater, swamps, wetlands, and water-based activities. This lets you weigh the landscapes and recreational opportunities described for each without treating them as a single place.

Swimming is also among the city’s recreational offerings. The swimming pools at Tom Byrne Park and Houston Avery Park offer free swimming, lap swimming, swimming lessons, and private parties. The facilities provide both recreational and training opportunities in the water; the two named parks are the respective locations of the city’s swimming pools.

Motorsports and Entertainment

Atmore Dragway is an eighth-mile racetrack that attracts motorsports enthusiasts from across the southeastern United States. Races held there include bracket racing, dragster races, and motorcycle races. This gives motorsports fans a specific reason to consider Atmore as a destination; specific event dates are a separate matter.

Wind Creek Casino offers poker, roulette, blackjack, and slot machines. Wind Creek Casino Hotel also offers golf, laser tag, and movie theaters right near the hotel rooms. These entertainment options are quite different from the city’s historical and nature-related offerings, adding to the range of choices for travelers looking to shape their stay differently.
