Lanett lies on the banks of the Chattahoochee River on the border between Alabama and Georgia. River activities, historic sites and recreational opportunities offer different perspectives on the city. To help plan your trip, you can first consider whether the river, local history, or sports and group activities should be your main focus.

Riverside Location and Recreation

The Chattahoochee River runs along Lanett’s banks and forms Alabama’s eastern border with Georgia. Activities on the river include fishing, paddling and hiking. Each activity offers something different: paddling takes you out on the water, hiking gets you moving on land, and fishing adds another way to spend time by the river. If you’d like to include time by the water in your trip, you can choose among these activities rather than treating them as one single experience.

The city’s parks and recreation program includes basketball, football, track and field, fitness and swimming; the options may change over time. These activities differ from those associated with the river: recreational offerings range from ball sports and track and field to fitness and swimming. This comparison can help you take different recreational interests into account when planning.

Golf and Events

Point University Golf Club offers public recreational golf and dining. Its event center has spaces for business meetings, training sessions, social groups and church groups. Availability for specific events may vary, so it’s a good idea to check dates in advance. Golf and dining offer a different focus from the spaces for group events. If you’re considering Lanett for such an occasion, you can include these options as separate points in your plans.

Local History and Places of Remembrance

The Fraternal Hall and Stores building is located in downtown Lanett. The distinctive two-story building was constructed in 1906 and still stands today. Lanett’s train station offers another point of historical interest: until 1923, it served both the Chattahoochee Valley (CV) Railway Company and the Western Railway of Alabama. The two sites have different points of interest: the building stands out for its architecture and construction date, while the station is notable for its former connections to two railroad companies.

Fort Tyler is located in both Lanett, Alabama, and West Point, Georgia. It can be visited on a self-guided tour and is considered the site of the last known fortified battle of the American Civil War. The Dollhouse is a local landmark whose history visitors can discover. Little Nadine’s Playhouse is a unique brick mausoleum over a child’s grave in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett. These sites offer different points of connection to the city’s history: a fort, a local landmark and a mausoleum with distinctive architecture.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Interstate 85 provides a direct north-south route from Lanett toward Atlanta or Montgomery; the city can be reached via exits 77 and 79. Lanett Municipal Airport is about five miles southwest of downtown, adjacent to Interstate 85 and the Huguley Industrial Parks, and accessible via exit 77. Exit 77 is therefore relevant both for reaching Lanett and for accessing the airport; exit 79 provides another way into the city.
