Ulukışla can be explored through three specific themes: the Öküz-Mehmet-Paşa Külliye in the town center, the landscape between the Medetsiz and Bolkar Mountains, and the local cuisine. The town center lies at the entrance to the broad stretch between these mountains, which form part of the Central Taurus. The town’s history and its mountain scenery are distinct focuses for your trip. For planning, it is worth distinguishing between the historic center and destinations in the nearby area.
The Külliye and the town’s history
The Öküz-Mehmet-Paşa Külliye is located in the town center at Pazar Square, on the road between Ankara and Adana. It is also known as Paşa Hanı, Kışla, and Ulukışla Caravanserai. The Menzil Külliye includes a covered arasta, arcades, and accommodation rooms. The complex is said to have been built in 1616.
The history of the building is also reflected in the town’s name: after the caravanserai built by Öküz Mehmet Paşa, the town was first called “Ulukışlak” and later “Ulukışla.” The Külliye inspired Faruk Nafiz Çamlıbel’s poem “Han Duvarları”—a literary connection that adds another cultural perspective to this historic site. The historic Anatolian Baghdad Road also runs through Ulukışla.
Local cuisine and viticulture
Ulukışla’s local cuisine includes Şepe, Sıkma, Gözleme, Sulu Köfte, Yoğurtlu Çorba, Silmeç, Kuymak, Kılan Böreği, Cilbir, Taşfırın Böreği, Erişte Pilavı, Yarpuz Çorbası, Sebzeli Bulgur Pilavı, and Batırık. These names give a concrete impression of the dishes associated with the town and what you can look out for as you explore its cuisine.
Traditional viticulture is practiced over 750 hectares in the village of Alpağut, mainly using local grape varieties. This agricultural tradition is another part of what defines the Ulukışla region. Viticulture and the varied local dishes offer different ways to experience Ulukışla’s culture.
Mountain landscapes and high elevations
Meydan Yaylası can be reached from Darboğaz. It lies at an elevation of 2,320 meters in the Taurus and Aladağ mountain region and is considered a starting point for climbers heading to 3,524-meter-high Medetsiz. The elevations of the yayla and Medetsiz differ by around 1,200 meters.
The Bolkar Mountains are home to the endemic Toros frog (Rana holtzi), a frog species measuring about 6 to 7.5 centimeters. It has been recorded at Çiniligöl at 2,600 meters and Karagöl at 2,500 meters. Its presence at Eğrigöl, at about 3,000 meters, was first recorded in 2007. These natural features are in the area around Ulukışla, not in the town center.
A description dated June 12, 2019, notes that the glacial lakes Çiniligöl and Karagöl can be reached from Meydan Yaylası with a backpack and suitable equipment. Camping is allowed in the lake area, provided the natural environment is not polluted. Check current conditions before making specific plans.
Archaeological sites and a thermal spring nearby
Porsuk Höyük, also known as Zeyve Höyük, is located in the area of Porsuk village in Ulukışla district, about 9 kilometers from the district center. Artifacts found there during excavations are displayed at the Niğde Museum. This allows you to combine a visit to the site with a look at the museum’s finds, without conflating the two locations geographically.
Çiftehan Thermal Springs are 30 kilometers from the center of Ulukışla district. The thermal spring is reported to have a temperature of 55 °C and a flow rate of 18 liters per second. If you plan a visit, check the current operating status of the facilities in advance.
In the wider travel region, between Alihoca and Maden at the Kalkankaya archaeological site, an inscription was identified as a Late Hittite mining license. It is another historical trace of the region, but lies outside the town of Ulukışla. When looking for a holiday rental in Ulukışla, you can therefore first decide whether the town center, with its Külliye and local history, or destinations in the nearby area will shape your itinerary.
