At just under 2,000 metres, Yüksekova is defined by a distinctive highland plain. At the end of March, snowmelt from the surrounding mountains temporarily turns a large part of the plain into a lake. Once the water recedes, lush meadows grow there. This seasonal change gives the landscape two distinct sides, which can be viewed alongside the Nehil Sulak Alan wetland. Yüksekova is considered one of the most important plains in Hakkâri Province and is described as the highest-altitude plain in Turkey.

Highland Landscape and Wetland

The Nehil Sulak Alan wetland lies within Yüksekova, along the Nehil stream, also at just under 2,000 metres. Its features include a diverse flora. This gives the area its own natural character alongside the plain’s broad, seasonally changing landscape.

The Nehil Wetland serves various ecological functions: rare bird species such as purple herons, herons, marsh harriers, great bustards and cranes find breeding habitat there. During migration, the area serves as a stopover for pelicans and flamingos. Breeding habitats and stopover functions describe two different aspects of birdlife; both are part of the landscape, along with its plant diversity.

An educational activity also connects Yüksekova with the topic of wetlands: in June 2026, 40 students took part in four days of practical training on wetlands, biodiversity and birdwatching. This included fieldwork in the Nehil marshland.

The changing landscape and the wetland differ in scale: at the end of March, a large part of the plain temporarily becomes a lake, while flora, breeding habitats and stopover functions are features of the specific Nehil area. This makes it possible to distinguish the open highland plain from a species-rich wetland as two different nature themes.

Culture with Specific Themes and Years

A photography exhibition on the theme “People and Agriculture” was held in 2017 at the Selahaddin Eyyubi Cultural Centre in Yüksekova. Its stated theme connects photography with a look at agriculture.

In the same cultural centre, photography, oil painting, bağlama and guitar courses concluded in 2017. A total of 86 participants received certificates. The courses ranged from photography and painting to two types of music.

An exhibition of charcoal drawings was also held at the cultural centre in 2019. Together, these cultural examples offer different focuses: the photography exhibition had a clearly defined theme, the courses covered visual arts and music, and the 2019 exhibition was devoted to charcoal drawings.

Another Regional Highlight

In the wider region around Yüksekova, Cilo Sat Dağları National Park is located in the İkiyaka Mountains in Yüksekova District. The park is used for mountaineering and scientific climbing trips. It is also considered suitable for winter sports and other leisure activities.

These different highlights sit side by side: the highland plain, Nehil Wetland and cultural examples relate to Yüksekova; the national park adds the mountainous area in the wider region to the picture. This makes it possible to distinguish between landscape and wetland themes, the specific cultural examples, and mountain-based activities when planning a trip.
