Karapazar has a distinctly archaeological profile: the Karapazar Roma Nekropolü, prehistoric settlement finds and a described grave stele offer different ways to explore the history of the place. At the same time, these remains must be distinguished by location and period. The necropolis is in the village, while Karapazar Höyük lies southwest of the settlement. Grey Phrygian pottery sherds were collected at the höyük. This makes it possible to distinguish a Roman-period necropolis from prehistoric finds; both shape Karapazar’s archaeological character.

Distinguishing the necropolis and höyük by location

The Karapazar Roma Nekropolü is in the village of Karapazar and is registered as a first-degree archaeological site. The registration is based on a decision dated 2014. Karapazar Höyük is about one kilometre southwest of the village, outside the settlement. This distance is approximate. Together with the compass direction, it provides a clear spatial reference. The necropolis and höyük therefore refer to different places, even though both bear Karapazar in their names. The registration gives the necropolis a specific classification, while the höyük is distinguished by its location and the pottery sherds collected there.

Grave stele and prehistoric finds

A grave stele stolen from the Kütüklü Mevkii in Karapazar offers a concrete picture of a Roman-period object. At the top, it showed a married couple standing upright side by side; below them were two oxen ploughing, followed by an eleven-line Greek inscription. The description divides the motif into three levels: human figures, a scene with working animals, and writing. This sequence is what makes the stele vivid. It is a different archaeological reference from the grey Phrygian pottery sherds at Karapazar Höyük: here, there is a funerary monument with an image and inscription; there, a pottery find associated with a settlement site classified as prehistoric.

A study also classifies Karapazar among the significant prehistoric settlements in Eskişehir. It covers the period from 2017 to 2021. This statement describes how the settlement site was assessed as part of the study; it should be distinguished from the necropolis’s first-degree registration. Together with the grey Phrygian pottery sherds, this offers two ways to understand Karapazar Höyük: a specific material find and the classification of Karapazar as a significant prehistoric settlement. The finds and the assessment of significance are two different types of information.

Akören Höyüğü as another location

Another archaeological location is Akören Höyüğü, also called Ayran Höyüğü. It lies about five kilometres northeast of Karapazar, west of the Seyitgazi–Eskişehir road and approximately one kilometre from it. Unlike Karapazar Höyük, which lies southwest of the village, Akören or Ayran is to the northeast. These directions help distinguish the two named höyük sites. The road location provides a second point of reference for orientation. This makes it possible to distinguish Akören/Ayran geographically from the archaeological sites in the village and to its southwest.
