Kairouan brings together a long urban history, a UNESCO World Heritage property comprising several sites, religious architecture and long-established markets. When planning a trip, it is therefore worth exploring the city from more than one perspective: the Aghlabid Basins tell the story of water supply, the medina is an urban ensemble, and the souks showcase different crafts and goods.

Medina, Ramparts and Aghlabid Basins

The Kairouan UNESCO World Heritage property comprises several sites: the medina with its suburbs, the Aghlabid Basins and the Zawiya of Sidi Sahib. The medina covers 54 hectares, with a further 20 hectares of suburbs. Together, they form an urban ensemble with the components of an Arab-Muslim city. Ramparts encircle the medina and extend for more than three kilometres. These figures give a sense of the scale of the historic urban area without conflating the individual parts of the World Heritage property.

The Aghlabid Basins are also part of the property. They consist of two interconnected open-air cisterns dating from the 9th century, built as a hydraulic system to supply the city with water. Their design, date and purpose offer a distinct way to explore Kairouan’s history: alongside religious buildings and city walls, water infrastructure is also part of the city’s cultural landscape. By looking at the UNESCO sites in context, visitors can distinguish the medina, the cisterns and the Zawiya of Sidi Sahib as different components of a shared World Heritage property.

A city of religious and architectural significance

Kairouan was founded in 670 and flourished in the 9th century under the Aghlabid dynasty. After the political capital was moved to Tunis in the 12th century, Kairouan remained the Maghreb’s foremost holy city. This chronology shows that the city’s political role and religious significance have distinct histories.

The Great Mosque of Kairouan was considered the largest mosque in the Maghreb until the Hassan II Mosque was built in Casablanca at the end of the 20th century. It is also one of the oldest mosques in the Islamic Maghreb. Decorative and architectural elements for which it was an early source of inspiration were adopted in Moroccan and Andalusian architecture. Its significance can therefore be understood both in the history of Kairouan and through its influence on architecture beyond the city.

Other religious sites also illustrate different aspects of the cultural heritage. The shrine of Abu Zam'a al-Balawi is among Tunisia’s important religious pilgrimage sites. Zawiyas in Kairouan serve as schools attached to a saint’s tomb and as study centres at the chapel of a religious community. One specific architectural detail can be found at the tomb of Sidi Abid, which is enclosed by a wrought-iron grille. The Zawiya of Sidi Amor Abada is the largest zawiya in Kairouan.

Souks, crafts and a local speciality

The markets can be distinguished by the goods and trades found there. Kairouan carpets, also known as zerbia, are sold in Souk al-Rub'. Shoes and saddles are made and sold in Souk al-Balaghjiya. Souk al-Jarraba is known for woven fabrics and blankets, as well as accessories for carpet-making, which are also sold there. The names of the souks thus offer a concrete glimpse into the diversity of trade and craftsmanship.

Other markets add to this picture: perfumes, incense and wedding supplies are sold in Souk al-Attarin, while copperware is made and sold in Souk al-Nahhasin. The markets differ not only in name, but also in the goods on offer and the types of production mentioned. One of Kairouan’s culinary specialities is maqroudh, a small, diamond-shaped sweet.
