Raf Raf brings together the coast and a distinctive hillside and mountain setting. Rafrāf lies on a hill, adjoining the 299-metre-high Djebel Nadhour. There are also the beaches along the coast of Bizerte, a view of the rocky islet of Pilaow and Muscat grapes from the vineyards of Rafrāf. This gives you a sense of the area’s coastline, landscape and local character before you choose hotels in Raf Raf.

The coast and its seasonal character

Raf Raf is among the beaches along the coast of Bizerte. Raf Raf plage, also known as El Hmari, is the coastal part of Rafrāf and stretches along the shore. Rafraf Lahmeri beach is especially lively every summer. This recurring seasonal character can help you choose when to travel if the coast is the focus of your stay.

Rafrāf at Djebel Nadhour

Djebel Nadhour is a 299-metre-high coastal mountain. Rafrāf lies on its northern slope, while Ghar El Melh is on its southern slope; the mountain ends at Cap Sidi Ali El Mekki. The contrast between the two slopes places Rafrāf and Ghar El Melh on opposite sides of the same mountain. Djebel Nadhour is therefore a geographical reference point that extends beyond Rafrāf. Two features come together in the area’s landscape: Rafrāf’s hillside location and the adjoining coastal mountain.

Islands and coastal views

An island lies off the coast of Rafrāf, about three kilometres from Rafrāf beach. Locally, it is called “القمة النارية” or “قمناريا”; the Romans called it “Camelera”, and on modern maps it is also named “Pilau”. Its approximate distance from the beach places the island in relation to the coast without equating it with the beach. The beach, offshore island and viewpoint are thus distinct geographical features.

Muscat grapes and local tradition

The vineyards of Rafrāf produce Muscat grapes, known locally as مسكي رفراف. This identifies an agricultural feature of the area alongside its coast and mountain. In the making of traditional costumes by women, Rafrāf is cited as one of the few exceptions to the general decline in Tunisia. These two aspects add references to local produce and cultural traditions to the landscape. They give the destination another dimension, without making the beach the only reason to visit.

Regional location and getting there

Raf Raf lies in northeastern Tunisia, about 60 kilometres from Tunis, 40 kilometres from Bizerte and seven kilometres from Ras Jebel. The three distances provide different points of reference for the region: at around seven kilometres, Ras Jebel is considerably closer than Bizerte or Tunis. A travel report from 2025 mentioned shared taxis from Bizerte to Ghar Elmelh, Rafrāf or Sounine. Check whether the service is available on your travel date before setting off.

If you are looking for hotels in Raf Raf, the coastal location and the slope of Djebel Nadhour may help you decide whether this is the right destination for you. Consider whether you want to focus on the beaches, the mountain landscape or the view of Pilaow from Raf Raf Plage during your stay.
