Ko Tao consists mostly of steep limestone mountains; flat areas make up only 30 percent of the island. This distribution shapes the landscape: coastlines, bays and coral sit alongside mountains and viewpoints as distinct aspects of the destination. Ko Tao and Ko Nang Yuan are the two main islands of the Ko Tao Archipelago. This provides a starting point for planning your trip: rather than viewing Ko Tao solely in terms of one beach or a single activity, you can focus on the landscape, sea views and underwater world as different highlights.
Coast and Coral
Sairee Beach is the longest beach on Ko Tao. Its features include white sand and a coral reef that runs parallel to the beach. This makes it possible to describe the beach in terms of its length, sand and the course of the reef. It differs from a small bay such as Ao Laem Thian, whose cliffs and rock formations give it a different profile.
Ao Laem Thian is a small bay fringed by cliffs, with rock formations, a shallow coral reef and brightly colored fish. On the eastern side of Ko Tao lies Ao Tanote, an area for observing coral. Nearby is Kong Sai Daeng, a small island with coral and brightly colored fish, as well as a good deep-diving site. Marine activities therefore include both coral watching and a designated deep-diving site.
Views and Activities
There are two different viewpoints for looking out over the island. Sun Suwan Viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of Ko Tao. Laem Ta Toh has a hilltop viewpoint overlooking Ao Thian Ok and Ao Chalok Ban Kao. This lets you choose between a panoramic view of the island and a view of two named bays.
The main activities on Ko Tao include snorkeling and scuba diving. The island is an internationally popular destination for dive training; visitors come from around the world to earn an Open Water diving certification. This gives diving a special place alongside snorkeling: for some, certification is the specific reason for their trip, while others get to know the island through its coastal and coral sites.
Getting Around and Finding Accommodation
On Ko Tao, it is possible to get around by boat, car and motorcycle. One of the two island transport routes runs from the pier north to Sairee Beach. Visitors can also take boat trips around Ko Tao to the island’s beaches and bays. These examples show two different ways to reach destinations on the island: a specific route to Sairee Beach and boat trips to beaches and bays.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can start with your travel plans: will dive training be the focus of your stay, or are snorkeling, coastal features and views more important? This decision helps you organize your priorities for your stay and take the activities described into account when planning.
