Wat Phra That Cho Hae is a striking introduction to Phrae: the province’s important temple stands on a low hill, and its chedi is clad in golden Jangko, combining artistic styles from Chiang Saen and Sukhothai. Its location, materials and blend of stylistic traditions give the site a distinctive character.

The landscape also shapes the province’s character: Phrae has both basin-like areas and mountainous terrain. Amid these varied geographic features, there is more to discover, from a dense stand of teak trees along the Yom to a cave with striking rock formations. Phrae can be explored through both culture and nature, without any one attraction defining the entire region.

Landscape and Natural Features

Dong Sak Ngam is a dense stand of large teak trees along the banks of the Yom, stretching for about 12 kilometers. The river is also part of another place: the stretch of the Yom in front of Erawan Cave is locally known as Kaeng Luang. The name refers to this stretch of river, not to the cave itself.

Erawan Cave is in Ban Pin, in Amphoe Long, within Doi Pha Klong National Park. Inside, sparkling stalactites and stalagmites have shapes reminiscent of an elephant’s trunk. This makes the cave a distinctive natural feature alongside the province’s teak stands and mountainous terrain: here, individual formations take center stage; there, an expansive stand of trees along the river.

Temples, Festivals and Handicrafts

Wat Phra That Cho Hae combines architecture with religious heritage. Its chedi is clad in golden Jangko and brings together artistic styles from Chiang Saen and Sukhothai. Those interested in architecture will find a tangible blend of two stylistic traditions at one of Phrae’s important temples. The low hill adds a clear sense of place to the setting.

The temple’s traditions include the annual Wai Phra That Cho Hae Muang Phrae Hae Tung Luang festival, held around March. It features a Lanna procession with Tung banners and local cultural performances. Exact dates vary according to the lunar calendar, so bear this in mind when planning if you want to experience the festival.

Another expression of local culture can be found in Ban Thung Hong, in Amphoe Mueang Phrae. The area is a production and sales center for Mor Hom indigo-dyed fabric, for which it is especially well known. This gives textile craftsmanship a clearly identifiable home in the province. The tradition can also be paired with a dish from Amphoe Long: Khanom Chin Nam Yoi consists of fresh rice-flour noodles served with a rich pork-bone broth. The exact preparation may vary by vendor.

Enjoy Nature and Plan Your Trip

Forest Park Phae Muang Phi has a nature trail where you can explore the park’s forest and geology. It is intended for schoolchildren, university students and general visitors. In Ban Na Khuha, a bamboo bridge runs through rice fields and is a pleasant place for a walk, taking in the view and observing the surrounding nature. The two places offer different ways to connect with nature: the trail focuses on forest and geology, while the bridge takes you through the fields and offers views of the surroundings.

Kaeng Suea Ten in Mae Yom National Park is a natural area where you can swim. Water conditions vary by season. Together with the nature trail and bamboo bridge, it offers a choice of different experiences: exploring geology and forest, walking through rice fields or spending time by the water. Which of these appeals to you most may help guide your outings.

For rail travel, Amphoe Den Chai is a specific point of reference within Phrae: a railway line runs through the district, and the State Railway of Thailand operates daily train services to various provinces. Timetables may change, so check connections for your travel dates. Alongside its cultural and natural attractions spread across the region, Phrae offers several ways to shape your trip around your personal interests.
