Thung Chang District brings together religious heritage, community-based cultural experiences and highland destinations. When planning your trip, you can choose between the temples and weaving in Ban Lai Thung and the mountain scenery near Ban Manee Phruek. Each place and experience has a different focus, from religious tradition and handicrafts to a short walk up a limestone mountain.

Religious Heritage and Tai Lue Culture

In Ban Sali village, Moo 1, stands Phra That Chom Sali Kao Duang Dee, an important religious monument in Thung Chang District. The annual worship tradition at Phra That Chom Sali Kao Duang Dee promotes Buddhism and preserves local customs and knowledge. Wat Thung Phueng, in Moo 5 of Thung Chang Subdistrict, houses a 700-year-old Buddha statue. Together, the two sites represent different aspects of the district’s religious heritage: an annual act of worship and a historic depiction of the Buddha.

Ban Lai Thung, in Moo 3 of Pon Subdistrict, is an OTOP tourism community where visitors can experience the identity and way of life of the Tai Lue. The program gives visitors the opportunity to watch Tai Lue weaving and learn how it is done. It also invites them to sample local food. Handicrafts and food are therefore among the experiences on offer, alongside the community’s way of life.

Mountain Scenery and Nature Trails

Ban Manee Phruek, in Moo 11 of Ngop Subdistrict, is a mountain village of the Hmong and Lua peoples. Doi Pha Phueng, in Manee Phruek 3 village, is a 1,600-meter-high limestone mountain. The walk from the parking area to the summit takes 20 minutes; weather and trail conditions may affect the walking time. This short estimated duration is a different planning reference from the longer journeys to the district.

Ban Pang Kae Viewpoint, in Moo 7 of Thung Chang Subdistrict, is a highland recreation spot. Ban Manee Phruek also has natural sites and trails with ecotourism potential. A project to develop and protect Ban Manee Phruek is classified as an agrotourism destination in the Doi Phu Kha mountain range. Together, these details illustrate different connections to the landscape, without implying a set route.

For the journey to and from Doi Pha Phueng, a community tourism group from Ban Manee Phruek offers a vehicle service. Visitors should notify the group before travelling. Check current availability in advance, and plan your visit with weather and trail conditions in mind.

Getting to and Around the District

Thung Chang District is accessible from Nan provincial capital via Highway 1080, a distance of 86 kilometers. Buses operate within the district. For Ban Lai Thung, the route from Nan city via Highway 101 is listed as approximately 75 kilometers. Other options include a private car and the Nan–Pon and Nan–Chalerm Phra Kiat bus routes. The two distances refer to different destinations and roads, not two estimates for the same route. Check bus schedules separately if you plan to travel by bus.

Cultural Highlights in the Wider Nan Destination

In the wider Nan destination, the Bo Kluea mountain salt wells are a rare geological phenomenon and have long been an important source of rock salt. Residents preserve the traditional salt-making process: they draw brine from the wells, boil it for several hours in large pans over wood-fired earth ovens, and then dry the crystallized salt in bamboo baskets. This is a distinct cultural highlight within the Nan destination.

The Lai Nam weaving tradition is also part of the wider Nan destination. The “Ko” or “Luang” techniques create flowing patterns inspired by water. Nan is also a major silver-producing center in northern Thailand. Regional traditions include Nan silver and the silversmithing of hill peoples, now also known as “Chomphu Phu Kha.” Most pieces are handmade. These regional crafts complement the distinct insight into Tai Lue weaving in Ban Lai Thung, without equating the two.
