Nakhon Si Thammarat lies 780 kilometers south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. The province brings together a wide range of experiences: Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan represents a long Buddhist tradition, while Khao Luang, waterfalls and numerous undeveloped beaches define the landscape. You can make culture, the mountainous interior or the coast the focus of your trip.

Buddhist Traditions and Shadow Puppetry

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has served as an important regional Buddhist center since its founding in the 8th century. Religious and local traditions that have continued for more than 1,500 years are preserved there. These include an annual ceremony to wrap the Great Relic and the Nora dance drama. At one place, you can encounter both a recurring religious ceremony and a local performing tradition.

The Suchart Subsin Shadow-Puppet Museum in Mueang District offers another cultural perspective. This living museum and educational center is dedicated to shadow puppetry as local cultural heritage and to its preservation. It complements the focus on religious traditions with an art form preserved here as part of the cultural heritage.

Mountains, Waterfalls and Fruit

Inland, lush jungles, waterfalls and a diverse range of exotic wildlife shape the character of the landscape. Khao Luang rises to 1,835 meters above sea level and is the source of more than 15 streams and rivers. One specific location in Khao Luang National Park is Krung Ching Waterfall, in the Krung Ching subdistrict. The mountain, waterways and waterfall each offer a different aspect of the natural experience.

Ban Khiriwong also brings together scenery and local produce: the village is in Kamlon, Lan Saka District, at the foot of Khao Luang. During fruit season, approximately from July to October, you can select, buy and taste champedak, mangosteens, rambutans and langsat there. This seasonal experience adds a specific opportunity to discover fruit from the region to your exploration of the landscape.

Coasts with Their Own Character

Nakhon Si Thammarat has numerous undeveloped beaches. Laem Talumphuk in Pak Phanang District is a crescent-shaped white beach. Khao Plai Dam, by contrast, is a coastal mountain with a conservation and recreation character on the border of Khanom and Sichon districts. From its viewpoint, you can enjoy sweeping views across Ao Thong Yang Bay. These differences can help you choose the coast based on the kind of scenery you prefer: beach shape and shoreline on one hand, mountain and views on the other.

The marine natural environment also includes the area being prepared for designation as Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park. It includes coral reefs and seagrass meadows and provides habitat for humpback dolphins, also known as pink dolphins, as well as green sea turtles. The proposed designation is part of the description of this area.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport is in Pak Phun, Mueang District. If you plan to use it for your trip, check flight connections and schedules separately. Base your search on the specific places you want to visit and choose the focus that best matches your interests.
