Places and an annual January event

Three distinct landmarks can help you get your bearings in Thepharak District: its landscape, a temple in the forest and an annual event. Pha Chom Phu is considered a noteworthy place in the district. Wat Tham Pheka is set amid natural forest in Bung Pru. The Sunset Festival at Chong Khao Khat is held there every January. Each offers something different: Pha Chom Phu is a scenic attraction, Wat Tham Pheka is a temple in a forest setting, and the festival is an annual January event. If you plan to time your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

In the wider destination of Nakhon Ratchasima

Khao Yai National Park lies in Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok. It is a World Heritage Site and an ASEAN Heritage Park, protecting habitats where visitors can often see wild elephants, gaurs, gibbons, hornbills and macaques. The park has seven short nature trails ranging from 1.2 to 8 kilometres; walking times range from 45 minutes to 6 hours. Overnight stays on these routes are not permitted. When planning, it is worth considering distance and walking time together: these are two different points of reference for a hike. A train journey to Khorat offers another perspective on the landscape: it passes through striking scenery, and along the way you may see, among other sights, the large white Buddha figure at Wat Theppitak on a densely forested hillside.

Phimai also offers a historical and museum focus within the wider destination of Nakhon Ratchasima. Phimai Historical Park was the site of the city of Phimai. In the 16th Buddhist century, around 1,000 years ago, King Suryavarman I had a Khmer-style sanctuary surrounded by walls and moats built there. Phimai National Museum houses archaeological and art-historical objects and presents the foundations and development of the culture of Thailand’s Lower Northeast. The park and museum therefore have different focuses: the historical site gives a sense of the former city and the sanctuary’s architectural style, while the museum focuses on its collections and cultural development.

Jim Thompson Farm brings together textile production and regional architectural styles. Its weaving village is an active production site with looms and silk-weaving processes. The Isan village currently comprises 40 houses showcasing examples of regional Isan architecture and covering nearly all building types. The two areas offer different perspectives on craft and architecture: the weaving village focuses on silk weaving, while the Isan village highlights the diversity of regional architectural styles. The number of houses refers to the village’s current size.
