Lopburi brings together a variety of stories and landscapes: ancient cities, palaces and temples sit alongside a waterfall that flows year-round and seasonal sunflower fields. The differences between the historic sites are particularly revealing—from the Dvaravati period to structures associated with the reign of King Narai. Nature, local food culture and a variety of activities are also part of what the region has to offer.

Historic Sites and Distinctive Architecture

Ban Luang Rap Ratchathut, also known as Ban Wichayen, is a historic site dating from the reign of King Narai the Great. Its architecture combines Renaissance elements with Thai traditions. A different historical period can be seen at the Ancient City of Sap Champa: this ancient city dates from the Dvaravati period and is located in Moo 7, Tambon Sap Champa, Amphoe Tha Luang, Lop Buri Province.

King Narai’s Palace is considered a significant palace in Thai history. French and Italian engineers designed and built it. The Somdet Phra Narai National Museum displays artifacts both in the palace buildings and in various museum pavilions. In this way, the historic buildings and the objects on display are presented in a shared context.

The prangs also offer a range of architectural styles. Phra Prang Sam Yot is built in the Bayon Khmer style and consists of three interconnected prang towers. The main prang at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat enshrines Buddha relics. It is considered the first Thai architectural prang and served as a model for many prangs of the Ayutthaya period.

Temples, Caves and Local Traditions

Wat Khao Samo Khon includes several caves: Tham Phra Non, Tham Phramanee, Tham Ching Cha, Tham Nam, Tham Phra Chai and Tham Kai Chae. Visitors come here to pay their respects to sacred objects and climb the mountain to take in the landscape of Tha Wung District. The caves, religious practices and views of the surrounding area are different facets of the same place.

At the Phra Kan Shrine, visitors pray for blessings and watch the monkeys. The Luk Son Chinese Shrine houses statues of Chinese deities, including Pun Thao Kong, Pun Thao Ma, Chao Pho Guan U and Chao Pho Khao Tok. There is also a sacred stone there that local people in Lop Buri believe to be an arrow belonging to Phra Ram. This should be understood as a local belief.

Water, a Dam and Seasonal Fields

At Namtok Wang Kan Lueang Arboretum, the waterfall flows from a large underground spring and runs year-round. There is a campsite by the waterfall. Another landscape landmark is the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam, described as Thailand’s longest earth dam. A railway station on the northeastern railway line, operated by the State Railway of Thailand, is located at the dam entrance.

The sunflower fields in Lop Buri bloom from November to January. Cultivated areas extend across the districts of Mueang Lop Buri, Phatthana Nikhom and Chai Badan. Particularly large areas are near Khao Chin Lae, close to Wat Welu Wan in Tambon Khok Tum, Mueang Lop Buri District. Unlike the water flowing at Namtok Wang Kan Lueang, the bloom is a seasonal sight. It can vary by field and year, so check in advance which fields are in bloom during your planned visit.

Boat Trips, Steps and Som Fak

In Bang Kham, in Ban Mi District, Ban Suan Khwan serves coffee by the canal and offers boat trips on the river. At Khao Wong Prachan, 3,890 steps lead to the summit. These examples show two different ways to experience Lopburi: a boat trip on the water or a climb up a staircase with a precisely stated number of steps.

Som Fak is also part of the region’s food culture. This local dish is made with fermented fish, salt, crushed cooked rice and pickled garlic. Along with the historic sites and landscapes, it helps create a varied picture of the region, where not every discovery needs to follow the same theme.
