A flat-topped sandstone mountain with a wide plateau gives Phu Kradueng National Park its distinctive character. Grassland, pine forest and rainforest alternate with waterfalls and cliffside viewpoints; hiking is a central activity. Loei thus combines open highlands with a wide variety of landscapes—a region where nature experiences are not limited to a single type of mountain peak.

Viewpoints for morning and evening

On Phu Kradueng, Pha Nok Aen is a sunrise viewpoint overlooking fields and mountain ranges. Pha Lom Sak reveals a different side of the park: its broad rock platform is a sunset viewpoint. The two places therefore offer different highlights at different times of day. If you choose your experiences based on the view you want, this contrast is a helpful starting point.

Phu Ruea National Park also has a broad summit plateau and pine forests. A rock outcrop there is shaped like a large sailing ship. Pha Lon Noi adds a sunrise viewpoint to this landscape: it is about three kilometers from the national park office and offers views of the surrounding mountains. Comparing it with Phu Kradueng is especially helpful when considering the viewpoints: morning views are part of the experience on both mountains, while Pha Lom Sak on Phu Kradueng puts the evening in the spotlight.

For getting around Phu Ruea National Park, it is also important to know that vehicles can drive up to the campsite. Check road and campsite conditions before your trip. This is a practical detail of visiting the park rather than a feature of the views themselves, but it may affect how you plan your stay.

Limestone paths and distinctive rock formations

Pha Ngam Stone Garden, also known as the “Kunming of Loei,” offers another way to experience the landscape. Winding paths lead between limestone formations, and in some places visitors must climb or crawl through caves. This terrain is very different from the broad mountain plateaus and viewpoints. The route conditions described may change, so check the latest conditions before visiting.

At Phu Thok in Chiang Khan District, a special rule applies to the ascent: visitors must leave their vehicles at the foot of the hill and use local service vehicles. Fares and operating details may change, so check the latest information before going up. This helps you plan your visit without treating the ascent as the same kind of experience as hiking and enjoying the landscapes in the national parks.

Festivals and history in Dan Sai

Phra That Si Song Rak was built between 2103 and 2106 in the Buddhist Era as a witness to the demarcation of a border between two kingdoms. The monument thus connects a specific place in Dan Sai with a historical border demarcation. The recurring customs there also have their own dates: communities in Dan Sai District hold a procession with a thousand rice balls to Phra That Si Song Rak every year on April 16.

Another annual event honoring the monument takes place in the sixth lunar month, between the 12th and 15th days of the waxing moon. Unlike the procession's fixed date, this period follows the lunar calendar. If festival dates are important to your trip, check the latest information in advance.

The Phi Ta Khon Festival in Dan Sai includes religious ceremonies, a procession featuring Phra Vessantara, folk games and cultural performances. Individual activities may vary from year to year. Along with the ceremonies at Phra That Si Song Rak, the festival shows the range of cultural events in Dan Sai, featuring both religious traditions and games and performances.

Discover Loei according to your interests

When choosing places to visit in Loei, you can focus on different things: the highlands and viewpoints of Phu Kradueng and Phu Ruea, the limestone formations of Pha Ngam Stone Garden, or the festivals and history of Dan Sai. The viewpoints can also be distinguished by sunrise and sunset; cultural events follow either a fixed date or the lunar calendar.
