Chiang Rai reveals striking architectural contrasts: Doi Tung Royal Villa combines elements of Lanna architecture with the style of a Swiss chalet; recycled pine is used for the wall cladding. Wat Rong Khun, by contrast, is known for its white architecture and was designed and built by Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. The decorative main hall of Wat Rong Seur Ten also makes its own statement: it features Buddhist art and Thai-style patterns in contrasting shades of blue and gold.

Architecture, Art and History

Another way to explore history is through exhibitions and collections. The Hall of Inspiration is an exhibition space about the Mahidol family and their development work to address social problems. The Hill Tribe Museum Chiang Rai collects traditional tools and information about important customs and cultures of various ethnic groups; its purpose is historical education. The Baan Dam Museum houses artworks by Ajarn Thawan Thanchanee.

The Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park brings together Lanna architecture, Buddhist artifacts, antiques and teak artifacts, along with a botanical collection of rare native plants in a wooded setting. Mingmuang Temple is considered the oldest temple in Chiang Rai. These places offer different perspectives, from art and religious objects to architecture and historical interpretation.

Mountain Landscapes and Nature Watching

At sunrise, Doi Pha Tang offers views over the Mekong and across seas of morning mist. Visibility can vary depending on the season and weather; if you want to make this view a focus of your visit, you should take both into account when planning.

At the Mae Fah Luang Arboretum on Doi Chang Moob, the focus is on native and rare plants as well as various rhododendron species. The arboretum also offers opportunities to observe local and migratory bird species. Plant and bird populations are seasonal and may change. At the Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai Province, visitors can see both sides of the Mekong; Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet at the river’s tri-border point. Nature experiences range from watching plants and birds to views of the river and sea of mist.

Tea, Coffee and Local Experiences

Choui Fong Tea Plantation pairs tea with food and drinks: its café and restaurant offer dishes made with different tea leaves, tea drinks and desserts. Visitors can sample tea there and watch a tea preparation demonstration. Doi Pamee in Mae Sai District is known for its Arabica coffee plantations. Pamee Village offers mountain views, cool weather year-round and cafés where visitors can enjoy coffee. If you plan to visit a café, check availability in advance.

For a stay in Pa Mhee village, homestays and a camping area are available; check their availability before your trip. Kun Nam Emerald Pool is in the area of Tham Luang Nang Non Cave and was created by the international rescue team. You should also check access conditions in the surrounding area before visiting. Visitors to Chiang Rai can weigh up art and architecture, tea and coffee experiences, and different landscapes and nature attractions without limiting their discoveries to any one type of trip.
