Betong District in Yala Province brings together viewpoints, forest landscapes, flowers and cultural heritage. The locations each have a different focus: panoramas at Aiyerweng and Khunung Silipat Viewpoint, wildlife in the Hala section of Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, a garden and hot spring in Tanoh Maeroa, and history and religious heritage at a tunnel and temple. In the wider destination of Yala, the Pattani River rises in Betong District and flows through Than To, Bannang Sata and Mueang Yala within the province. Yala is the province; Betong District is the local geographic level here.

Sea of Mist and Panoramic Views

Aiyerweng Skywalk is located in Ban Tharn Mali, in Aiyerweng Subdistrict, Betong District, Yala Province. A sea of mist can be observed from there throughout the year. The 61-meter-long walkway made of transparent glass offers a 360-degree view. Khunung Silipat Viewpoint also offers a 360-degree view of a sea of mist visible year-round. Both viewpoints share the appeal of panoramic views; the glass walkway also gives Aiyerweng Skywalk its distinctive character.

Forest, Water and Flowers

The Hala section of Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Betong District, Yala Province. The wildlife sanctuary is home to rare animals such as Malayan tapirs, rhinoceroses and siamangs. Species counts also give an idea of its birdlife: 10 of the 13 species of hornbill found in Thailand occur in Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary.

Inthason Waterfall has a natural pool for swimming; water conditions can vary seasonally. Two other natural attractions are in Tanoh Maeroa Subdistrict. Winter Flower Garden is located in Piyamit 2 Village, where tulips, lilies, hydrangeas and chrysanthemums are among the flowers grown. The natural Betong Hot Spring is in Ban Nam Ron, also in Tanoh Maeroa Subdistrict. The garden offers a floral focus distinct from the forest and waterfall.

History, Temples and Festivals

Piyamit Tunnel was used as a hideout base and for storing supplies during political conflicts on the Malay Peninsula. Wat Phutthathiwat is a hilltop temple in Betong Subdistrict, Betong District, Yala Province. Its chedi is designed in the style of Sri Vijaya art; Buddha relics are kept in the main chedi. The tunnel and temple thus represent different themes: the history of political conflicts on the one hand, and architecture and religious heritage on the other.

Two annual festivals also add their own distinct focus to the events calendar. The Vegetarian Festival takes place at Wat Phothisatto Chao Mae Kuan Im Betong, also known as Wat Kuannim. The Betong Chicken Festival is held every year in early April. If you would like to include either festival in your travel plans, check the current calendar before departure.
