Along the Mun River and across the plains of Satuek District, you’ll encounter a range of points of interest: community-based cultural tourism in Ban Tha Ruea, evidence of ancient settlements, and places to relax along the riverbank. Considered separately, these highlights show how river activities, archaeological traces, and recreation each offer their own insights into the region.
Cultural Tourism in Ban Tha Ruea
The Ban Tha Ruea community is located in Tambon Tha Ruea in Satuek District and is an important destination for cultural tourism. It participates in the OTOP Nawatwithi program. If you are planning your trip specifically around this program participation, check its status before you travel, as it may change.
Community tourism includes fishing and learning about the traditional way of life of residents along the river. Boat trips for the views are also among the activities. This makes both riverside life and experiences on the water central to Ban Tha Ruea. If a boat trip is important to your plans, check in advance what is currently available.
Archaeological Traces in the Area
Ban Khok Mueang is one of the ancient settlements in the plains near the Mun River identified through aerial photography and archaeological research. The river region is therefore also associated with a history of settlement: the plain is not just a landscape, but a place where people lived in the past.
Near Satuek District is the Satuek Kiln Site in Ban Dong Yai Pha, about six kilometers west of the district on Huai Takong (Lam Ta Khong). There are at least ten kilns there. The site is interpreted as an area where pottery in the Buriram style was produced. Together with the ancient settlements near Ban Khok Mueang, the kilns offer another archaeological perspective on the area.
Recreation and Orientation Along the Mun River
Tha Ruea Tha Rak is an important riverside destination on the Mun River, where locals and tourists come to relax. The Big Buddha (พระพุทธรูปปฏิมาสันตยาภิรมย์สตึกอุดมราษฎร์นิมิตมุนินทร์) stands in the park marking the 72nd anniversary, on the riverbank opposite the Satuek District administrative building.
One historical event associated with the riverbank is the longboat race, held on November 4 and 5, 2023, on the Mun River at the park marking the 72nd anniversary, in front of the district administrative building. This dated edition adds context to the river region without establishing a recurring date for other years.
Buriram as a Wider Travel Destination
In the wider travel destination of Buriram, Phanom Rung Historical Park is located on an extinct volcano in Ta Pek, in Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buri Ram Province. According to the inscriptions and architectural remains, the area around the park had been an ancient settlement since the 15th Buddhist century. This is a distinct regional history highlight alongside the settlements and riverside destinations in Satuek District.
Phanom Rung also has an annual tradition of ascending the site: it takes place from April 2 to 4, or on the full moon day of the fifth lunar month. During the event, the first light of dawn shines through all 15 gates. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.
