Bueng Khong Long offers several highlights to consider when planning a trip: wintering migratory birds in the wetland, water activities and food at Kham Somboon Beach, and Naka Cave, with its religious visiting practices. These offer distinct interests: nature watching, time at the beach, and a climb with a cultural connection.

Lake and wetland

Bueng Khong Long is a large lake. Bueng Khong Long Wetland is home to a wide variety of aquatic plants and wetland animals; wintering migratory birds are a particular feature of this natural environment. Wildlife abundance varies by season. Winter is a particularly well-defined time for birdwatching, although wildlife numbers can fluctuate with the seasons.

The Bueng Khong Long birdwatching tower stands right beside the lake in Bueng Khong Long Public Park. An older description gives its height as three storeys; check its current structural condition before visiting.

Kham Somboon Beach: water activities and dishes

Kham Somboon Beach is located in a wildlife sanctuary and in the Bueng Khong Long Ramsar wetland. Phu Langka can be seen from the beach, although visibility may vary depending on conditions. Equipment for water activities can be rented throughout the day. Food stalls serve, among other things, grilled fish, grilled shrimp, Pla Pa-sa and Jaew Hon. When planning your trip, you can consider both water activities and local dishes as beach highlights.

Naka Cave: location and hike

Naka Cave is in Phu Langka National Park, in Bueng Khong Long District and near Wat Tham Chai Mongkhon. Before the climb, visitors often pay their respects to the Naga figure Pu E Lue. The cave therefore combines a connection to nature and the landscape with a religious visiting practice that plays a part even before the climb.

For the wider Bueng Kan destination, the hike to Naka Cave is described as taking about 4–5 hours round trip, with an ascent of around 1.4 kilometres. Check current trail conditions and access rules before setting out. In 2026, the cave was scheduled to reopen on June 1 after its annual conservation closure, which includes May. Check the current seasonal status before your trip.

Local traditions

Long-standing local traditions in Bueng Khong Long include the Rocket Festival, Songkran, Buddhist Lent and Loy Krathong. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific event dates for your travel period. These traditions provide a cultural highlight alongside the nature and cave themes.

Bueng Kan as a wider destination

Bueng Kan also offers further nature and cultural themes as a wider travel destination. The regional overview covers waterfalls and mountain attractions, the Mekong, and natural, historical, artistic and cultural sites. Hin Sam Wan is a formation of three rocks in Mueang Bueng Kan District, within the Kala Tropical Rain Forest, Phu Sing Forest and Dong Si Chomphu Forest reserves.

Visitors can walk onto the back of the “Father Whale” at Hin Sam Wan, watch the sunrise and see the Mekong and Laos across the river in the distance. Another example is Phu Thok: Wat Chetiya Khiri Wihan, also called Wat Phu Thok, is located on the mountain. The staircase to the summit is divided into seven levels; the highlight is on the fifth level of Phu Thok Noi. These destinations broaden the picture of Bueng Kan to include rock formations, mountain scenery and culture.
