Other Destinations in Latakia Governorate
Ras Shamra is in Latakia Governorate. This archaeological site covers about 27 hectares and includes the temples of Baal and Dagan. The royal palace at Ras Shamra covered more than 7,000 square meters and served primarily as the king’s residence and the seat of the central administration. The high priest’s house contained a library with numerous Ugaritic literary texts. The size of the site thus offers clues about governance, administration and written culture.
The village of Wadi al-Qala'a lies in the Jableh countryside and includes archaeological attractions such as castles and caves. A stone cave there is more than 100 meters long, with pointed carvings and broad areas of naturally formed stone. The waterfalls named after the village plunge more than 16 meters through rocks and caves. Wadi al-Qala'a is also known for its cold springs; water conditions can vary seasonally.
Jableh is known for the Hisham Palace, its Great Mosque and the old Souq al-Dablan market. Another architectural landmark in Latakia Governorate is Saladin Castle, where Byzantine, Crusader, Ayyubid and Mamluk architecture come together. Kessab is characterized by green mountain landscapes and forests, as well as a temperate climate; seasonal and current conditions may vary.
The Furonloq forests in Latakia Governorate offer another regional highlight: they are a nature-rich protected area with high biodiversity. In 2025, the Latakia Tourism Directorate promoted camping activities there.
