Hofstetten is a locality in the municipality of Elgg in the Canton of Zurich, situated at an elevation of 644 metres. For planning a day out, hiking trails and cultural heritage take centre stage: the Hofstetten–Wenzikon–Steig trail runs along the edge of the forest and offers views of the village, the Farenbachtobel gorge follows the stream, and there are several hiking suggestions on the Schauenberg. In good visibility, the panorama stretches far into the distance. Historical landmarks include a castle ruin, a high watchtower and the Türmlihaus. You can therefore tailor your stay either more towards the outdoors or towards local history.

Hiking and planning your time

The Hofstetten–Wenzikon–Steig route runs along the edge of the forest and opens up views of the village of Hofstetten. One 10-kilometre option is listed as taking about two and a half hours to hike. Allow for an approximate duration: conditions and breaks may affect the actual time. For this route, it is recommended that you take the postbus from Elgg to the Hofstetten Dorf stop and continue on foot from there. Check the current service before setting off.

The Tour d'Elgg presents seven hiking suggestions around and on the Schauenberg; they take between one and four hours. You can compare this time range with the approximately two and a half hours for the 10-kilometre option to gauge how much time to allow for the day. One return option on the Hofstetten–Wenzikon–Steig route leads through the Farenbachtobel gorge back to Elgg. The options therefore differ both in their stated duration and in their route.

Farenbachtobel Gorge and Schauenberg

In the Farenbachtobel nature reserve, the path follows the stream and crosses small bridges. The proximity of the stream and the bridges define this route, setting it apart from the view of Hofstetten from the edge of the forest or the panorama from the Schauenberg. A general ban on vehicles applies in the area, including bicycles. If you are cycling, check the local regulations in advance; plan to walk this section.

In good visibility, the Schauenberg offers a panoramic view from Lake Constance to the Black Forest, and from the Bernese, Central Swiss, Grisons and Vorarlberg Alps to the Säntis. Mountain peaks in more than 20 Swiss cantons and countries are visible. The route from Huggenberg to the Schauenberg has a designated rest area with a barbecue spot. Check its condition before your visit.

Cultural heritage and local history

The historical landscape of Hofstetten / Schauenberg includes a medieval castle ruin and an early modern high watchtower. In Hofstetten, the Doktorhaus, also known as the Türmlihaus, is located at Am Bächli 2. These places add specific historical landmarks to the hiking options.

The political history can also be put in chronological context: in 1424, Hofstetten came under the high jurisdiction of the city of Zurich along with the County of Kyburg, and this became final in 1452. In 1798, Hofstetten became a political municipality and had always belonged to Elgg ecclesiastically. Hofstetten remained an independent political municipality until 31 December 2017; since 2018, it has been part of the municipality of Elgg.
