A 1.3 km village-centre trail, ten QR-code stops with a story in Swiss German, and a museum housing a grain mill dating from 1668 give Elgg’s attractions a clear local focus. There are also hiking options with different timeframes and a bike trail. This makes it easy to shape your stay around local history and outdoor activities.

Local history in the lanes

The Elgg Local History Museum, housed in the Humbergtrotte, brings the history and customs of the small country town to life. Its extensive collection covers crafts, agriculture, viticulture, domestic life, schooling, church affairs and politics. Among its historical treasures is a grain mill dating from 1668. More tangible landmarks in the townscape include over 20 public fountains; five date from the 16th century and are especially decorated on feast days.

The largely continuous rows of houses enclose a broad network of lanes formed by the Vordergasse, Obergasse, Hintergasse and Untergasse, arranged in a square. At the heart of this area stands the Reformed Church, whose origins date back to the 9th century. The museum, lanes and fountains reveal different aspects of local history, from everyday life such as crafts and domestic life to the historic townscape.

Stories and activities in town

Elgg has two distinct “Gschichtli-Wege” (little story trails): one in the town centre of Elgg and another from Neuelgg to the village centre and back. The loop through the old village centre starts at Lindenplatz and is about 1.3 km long. At ten stops, numbered QR codes link to a continuing story that you can listen to in recordings narrated in Swiss German.

A different kind of experience is offered by “Gaston & Baptiste”, an outdoor escape game that turns all of Elgg into a scavenger-hunt playing field. The 1.4 km route runs from Coop through the small town to Elgg Church. At about 1.3 km for the Gschichtli trail and 1.4 km for “Gaston & Baptiste”, the stated distances are close; the main difference is the format: a continuing audio story in one case, an escape game in the other.

Hikes and bike trail

The Elgg forest nature trail is a varied circular hike of about an hour. Small information boards identify native tree and shrub species. The “Tour d’Elgg” offers seven hiking suggestions, each taking between one and four hours. While the forest nature trail has an approximate duration, the collection of hikes covers a range of timeframes.

Another hiking trail leads from the southern part of Elgg through the Fahrenbachtobel gorge to the venerable Guhwilmühle farmhouse inn and onwards to Schauenberg. At 890 m above sea level, this is the highest point in the municipality. For a training loop in the forest, the Vitaparcours starts at the car park at Elgg swimming pool and winds through Rumisberg Forest with 15 stations. It was created in spring 2024.

The specially designed bike trail runs in two stages from Schauenberg via Olpis and Guegenhard Forest down to Elgg. Both singletrack sections can be reached from Elgg via a signposted circular route that also ends in Elgg. This means you can choose between a route with two downhill stages to Elgg and the described circular option starting and ending in Elgg.

Outdoor pool and regional traditions

Elgg outdoor pool combines a historic bathing facility from the 1930s with modern swimming amenities. It has a 50-metre pool, a separate paddling pool and a playground with a sandbox. The main pool also has a small current channel.

Local food culture has its own traditions too: Elggermannen are male-shaped pastries made from braided bread dough, traditionally baked for St Nicholas. From May to December, the Elgg market is held every Saturday and offers fresh produce and regional specialities. As the seasonal schedule may change, it is advisable to check the latest dates before visiting.
