In Dinhard, nature and village history are distinct attractions: the rural recreation area and the nature reserve at Gurisee are part of the area, as are the church, the Powder Tower and historical landmarks. You can decide whether to focus your stay more on the landscape, on culture or on both.

Landscape and nature at Gurisee

Dinhard’s six villages are set in a landscape of small streams and hedgerows, wide fields and meadows, vineyard slopes and wooded moraine hills. The rural recreation area can be reached by train, bicycle or on foot.

One specific natural attraction is the nature reserve at Gurisee, a popular destination for excursions in Dinhard. In 1991, the Gurisee area was added to the Inventory of Raised Bogs of National Importance.

Seasonal activities and transport links

The Ziegelweiher plays a seasonal role in the daily lives of many local residents. In summer, it saves them a trip to an outdoor swimming pool elsewhere; in cold winters, a visit to an artificial ice rink elsewhere. The two activities are therefore clearly tied to different conditions: swimming in summer and skating in cold winters. If the pond is important to your plans, take these seasonal conditions into account.

Transport links also vary depending on the destination and mode of transport. A bus takes public transport users from Dinhard to Seuzach or towards Andelfingen. Check the route and timetable again before travelling. For shopping in Winterthur city centre, the municipality gives an approximate travel time of 15 minutes by car or train. This estimate refers to Winterthur and the shopping journey; it should not be confused with the bus destinations.

Church, Powder Tower and local history

Dinhard’s present-day church was built between 1511 and 1515. The chancel contains unfinished and overpainted late Gothic paintings dating from 1526. They were carefully uncovered during an interior renovation and can be viewed at any time. Check the access arrangements before your visit.

The Powder Tower stands out as a prominent outpost of Kirch-Dinhard. It was built as a shooting house in the 18th century and used as a schoolhouse from 1846 to 1950. These two periods show the building’s different functions: first a shooting house, then a schoolhouse. The tower thus complements the church’s history with another specific local building.

Earlier references to Dinhard’s history can also be placed in context. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1275 as “Thynhart”. In 1943, an urn from the Hallstatt period was found in a burial mound at Riedmühle; it is considered the oldest evidence of human presence in Dinhard. The documentary reference and the archaeological find represent two different types of historical record.

A memorial stone near the church commemorates the humanist Jakob Wiesendanger, known as Ceporinus (1499–1525), who was born in Dinhard. The Dinhard farm shop offers another local connection: it has been selling directly to customers since 2009 and offers tours for school classes. Local history and a present-day agricultural connection are among the different themes you can consider when choosing your stay.
