Wolfhausen, a district of the municipality of Bubikon in the Canton of Zurich, combines a village market held on a specific date with traces of railway and industrial history. There are also signposted paths from the district towards Lake Egelsee, as well as a nature trail by the lake. When planning a stay, you can choose between a specific market day, local history and walks within the municipality.
The village market as a spring event
The Wolfhausen village market takes place every spring on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, in Kaffigasse and along the old Herschärenstrasse. The next event is scheduled for 8 May 2027. The market features around 40 stalls and a children’s flea market. The village market has been held since 1983; its recurring date makes it a concrete focal point for a spring stay in Wolfhausen.
Railway and industrial history
Part of the local history can be traced through the former Uerikon-Bauma Railway. The surviving section of track from Bubikon railway station to the junction with Oberwolfhauserstrasse in Wolfhausen is the last remaining section of its former main line, which operated from 1901 to 1948. Together with the station building in Wolfhausen, it has been preserved as a unified complex.
The construction of the railway spurred Wolfhausen’s industrial growth; large factory buildings have shaped the appearance of the village ever since. The Wolfhausen galvanizing plant is also one of the historic witnesses to the area’s former industry. The track, station building and factory buildings provide several concrete points of reference for local history, without the need for a recurring event.
Schoolhouse and bronze wolf
Another architectural highlight is the yellow Art Nouveau schoolhouse on Fosberg, which was inaugurated in 1912. A bronze wolf by Swiss artist Rudolf Wening also stands by the Volg in Wolfhausen. These two features complement the industrial history with a schoolhouse from the Art Nouveau period and a work of art with local significance.
Walking paths to Lake Egelsee
A local, signposted walking path leads from the Wolfhausen post office via Fosberg School, Geissbergweg, Geissbergholz and Widerzell to Lake Egelsee. The sequence of these waypoints helps you identify this route as a specific connection from the district to the lake.
Lake Egelsee is in the municipality of Bubikon, not in the district of Wolfhausen itself. The idyllic moorland lake is surrounded by nature reserves. The nature trail begins at Egelsee lido and loops around the extensive adjacent nature reserve. Eight information boards explain the animals and plants, the relationship between agriculture and nature conservation, and the area’s former use and origins. The trail thus connects nature-related topics with human use and the development of the landscape.
Local walking path or O10
The local walking path to Lake Egelsee is distinct from the intermunicipal O10 hiking trail. The latter crosses the municipality of Bubikon on the route Oberwolfhausen–Ritterhaus–Hasenstrick–Bachtel and is marked with yellow signposts. The local walking path is marked in white. The different signposts and the distinct sequence of places on each route help distinguish the two route descriptions.
The municipality of Bubikon as a whole has a dense network of well-maintained footpaths and hiking trails. When planning your time in Wolfhausen, you can choose between several highlights: the village market held on a specific Saturday, the architectural traces of railway and industrial history, or a walk towards Lake Egelsee focusing on nature and the landscape.
