Uitikon combines stargazing, village history and routes on the Uetliberg, but each experience has a different focus. At the observatory, views of planets, stars, distant nebulae and galaxies depend on the season and weather; at the church, you can pinpoint a specific moment in the village’s history. When planning, you can therefore decide first whether you want to focus on observations, architectural history or outdoor activity. This leaves room for a stay shaped by your own interests, without turning the attractions into a tightly scheduled itinerary.

The Observatory and the Sky Above Uitikon

Built in 1979, the Uitikon Observatory is located on the municipality’s Allmend. Its program is aimed at children aged six and over, as well as adults; depending on the season and weather, visitors can see planets, stars, distant nebulae and galaxies. You can also enjoy the starry sky without a telescope outside the observatory: the natural screening of Zurich’s lights makes this possible. Visibility also depends on the weather and light conditions. This offers two different ways to observe the sky: a visit to the observatory and its program, or a view of the sky from elsewhere. Check the latest program details before your visit.

The Church and Getting to the Village Center

The church is in the village center, in a slightly elevated position. It was built on the initiative of Johann Jakob Steiner, and its topping-out ceremony was held on June 22, 1625. It is one of the first churches newly built in Reformed Zurich. For travelers interested in Reformed architectural history, it makes a notable stop. The “Uitikon Dorf” stop is directly in front of the church. PostBus routes 215 and 245, as well as the Uitikon local bus, stop there; connections are available to the S10 on the Uetliberg Railway. As transport connections can change, check the timetable for your travel day.

Forest Road, Vitaparcours and Pump Track

A forest road leads to the summit of the Uetliberg from the parking lot in Uitikon-Waldegg. Of the listed access routes, this one has the gentlest gradient; trail conditions may vary. You can compare the route with the other listed access points based on its gradient. Another option for getting active in Uitikon is the Zurich vitaparcours Uitikon, which starts above the indoor swimming pool by the Allmend parking lot and is right next to the pool. Uitikon sports facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and fitness facilities. A pump track adds a circuit for bikes, scooters or skateboards. You can choose between a forest road to the summit, a fitness trail beside the indoor pool and a circuit; these offer different activities and starting points. Check the latest information about the facilities and starting point before your visit.

Districts and Getting Around

Uitikon lies in the lower Reppisch Valley, where it meets the Limmat Valley, on the western slope of the Uetliberg. The municipality comprises the districts of Ringlikon, Waldegg and Uitikon; the topography creates this three-part layout, which is further emphasized by the road through Waldegg. This layout is relevant when planning a day that combines different attractions: the church is in the village center, while the route to the Uetliberg starts at the parking lot in Uitikon-Waldegg and the observatory is on the Allmend. When choosing where to stay, these specific destinations can help you shape your plans around your own interests.
