Schleinikon combines historic buildings with the rural surroundings of the Wehntal Valley. The Zythüsli, the granary with wine press and the Schellenberghaus in Dachslern each tell different stories of buildings and places; around the village centre, meadows, forests and the Surb River shape the landscape. For planning your stay, you might consider walks and cycle tours, as well as travelling to Zurich by postbus and train.

The Zythüsli and granary in the historic village centre

The Zythüsli is Schleinikon’s best-known building and a half-timbered structure dating from the 18th century. Since it was built, it has served as a home for a fire engine; the local fire brigade used it until the 1920s. A small bell dating from the 15th century, bearing Gothic minuscule lettering, is preserved in the roof turret. Thanks to its elevated position on the undeveloped southern edge of the village, the Zythüsli serves as a landmark. Its architectural style, bell and former use lend the building distinct historical significance.

Written records of Schleinikon’s settlement history date back to the 12th century. A former silk-weaving mill is another trace of the village’s history. The granary with wine press stands in the historic village centre: according to its inscription, it was built in 1685 and is probably one of the oldest surviving buildings in Schleinikon. The wine press bears witness to the economic history of winegrowing and adds a connection to former agricultural use to the story of the building.

The Schellenberghaus in Dachslern

The Schellenberghaus with its double barn stands in the district of Dachslern. It is an authentically preserved late-Baroque farmhouse from the end of the 18th century. The house and double barn form a unified historic group of buildings bordering a rectangular, tarmac-covered courtyard. The Schellenberghaus has retained its original room layout and essential parts of its fittings, characteristic of rural domestic culture. These include tiled stoves in the living rooms and a smoke chamber. Unlike the standalone Zythüsli, which sits on higher ground, here the focus is on the interplay between the house, barn and courtyard.

Meadows, forests and trails in the Wehntal Valley

Schleinikon is a rural municipality in the Wehntal Valley, with extensive agricultural and forest areas. The area around the village centre is characterised by meadows, forests and the Surb River. It is well suited to hiking and cycle tours, offering a distinct focus on outdoor activities alongside the local architectural history.

Local amenities and the Älplerchilbi festival

Opposite the municipal offices is the village shop, «Milchhütte», with a small café, a grocery shop and a bakery. After a walk or cycle tour through the green forests and fields of the Wehntal Valley, the «Althaus» restaurant is a place to take a break. A large Älplerchilbi festival is held in Schleinikon every five years. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance.

Plan your journey and stay

The Wehntal railway line runs through Schleinikon, but the municipality does not have a railway station. During weekday peak hours, postbus route 555 serves the municipality from Schöfflisdorf-Oberweningen railway station. The Wasen, Dachsleren and Schleinikon Dorf stops serve the respective districts. From Schöfflisdorf-Oberweningen station, the S15 provides a direct train connection to Zurich. Check the timetable for route 555 for your travel date.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Schleinikon, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the village and Dachslern offer specific points of interest in local history, while the surroundings of the village centre are suited to walks and cycle tours. For trips to Zurich, the connection via Schöfflisdorf-Oberweningen is relevant. This lets you plan around the things that matter to you during your stay.
