Otelfingen combines a very well-preserved village center with a varied architectural history and a golf park. This offers different ways to plan a stay: focus on the townscape and historic buildings, or spend time in the golf park and natural landscape. Otelfingen station is served by the S6 between Zurich and Baden; check the current timetable for your travel date.

Village Center, Church and Architectural History

The village center is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance (ISOS). Its architectural character includes imposing half-timbered buildings. Their roof ridges generally run from west to east, while the houses stand at right angles to the street. When looking around, pay attention not only to individual facades, but also to how the roofs and houses are oriented in relation to the street.

A walk through Otelfingen also takes you to the Reformed Church. The choir-tower church dates from 1607 and 1667. Its highly visible Neo-Gothic spire was built in 1842 and was inspired by Zurich’s Grossmünster. The building therefore brings together several periods of construction. For anyone interested in church architecture, it is a notable stop on the walk.

Other buildings reveal different aspects of the townscape: Otelfingen has a former parsonage granary dating from the early 19th century, with a shed and cellar. A large multipurpose building has decorative half-timbering dating from 1676 and 1789, as well as a cross-wing with a forecourt and fountain. The oldest of four former Meierhof houses dates from 1691; the Raubehaus, also dated 1691, stands in the background.

The area’s settlement history goes back much further: a settlement arose along the village stream more than 3,000 years ago. The history of the Reformed parish includes records on the parish, church administration and community life from 1747 to 1757. A register of pastors covers the period from 1525 to 1814. For the hereditary leasehold farm Fridhofers Hof, a deed of sale from 1531 and a letter of acknowledgment from 1535 have been preserved; a dispute settlement in 1551 addressed the location, wastewater and maintenance of a community fountain. The parish’s and church’s historic ties to Wettingen Abbey are also part of the town’s history.

The station building adds the history of railway construction to these traces of the past. It was built in 1865 as a temporary station building for BĂĽlach, during the early years of Swiss railway construction, and has stood in Otelfingen since 1877.
